Multiple allegations of sexual offenses are under investigation by authorities after recent claims were made against British actor and comedian Russell Brand. Earlier this month, The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches reported allegations of rape, sexual assault, and abuse made by four women against the 48-year-old entertainer.
Russell Brand preemptively denied the allegations on social media, categorically refuting the claims as “extremely egregious and aggressive attacks” and expressing his disbelief.
The Metropolitan Police’s Scotland Yard confirmed on Monday that detectives have initiated an investigation into allegations of sexual offenses, although they did not mention Brand by name. No arrests have been made in connection with the investigation.
In a statement, the police said, “Following an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times, the Met has received a number of allegations of sexual offenses in London. We have also received a number of allegations of sexual offenses committed elsewhere in the country and will investigate these.” All the reported offenses are classified as “non-recent.”
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, urged potential victims of sexual offenses to come forward, emphasizing that support and specialist officers are available to assist those who wish to report such incidents, regardless of how long ago they occurred.
The allegations against Brand include accusations of rape, sexual assault, and abuse by four women, with one of them being 16 years old at the time of the alleged incident. This is the legal age of consent in the United Kingdom. The incidents are reported to have occurred between 2006 and 2013.
Russell Brand, who is expecting his third child with his wife Laura Gallacher, released a video statement on X (formerly Twitter), thanking his supporters and acknowledging the distressing nature of the recent developments.
