Bella Thorne has shattered records by earning a whopping $1 million dollars in less than 24 hours after launching her OnlyFans account. The former Disney star joined the website last week, and fans flocked to the subscription platform.

What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is a social media and content sharing platform. It allows users to create an account and charge a monthly fee for fans to access exclusive content. According to the Evening Standard, “The company says that creators with 10,000 followers can earn between $499 and $2,495 a month. The platform does take a 20 per cent cut of any earnings, however it says it has paid out over $700 million to creators.”

The pandemic has driven people to OnlyFans

According to Vice, COVID-19 is driving people to OnlyFans, both as users and as people desperate to supplement income lost during the pandemic. Vice shares, “[OnlyFans has become] a serious source of income for droves of people overnight. As hundreds of thousands of people face unemployment during the coronavirus pandemic, the platform reported more than a 75 percent increase in new sign-ups in the last month, and told Forbes that it’s gaining around 150,000 new users every 24 hours.”

Moving away from a platform for sex workers?

OnlyFans was originally created to offer a broad range of content, from creative writing and artwork to crafts and fitness. Lax rules on explicit imagery soon drew sex workers to the website in droves. Those who had been producing explicit content with third party providers, who controlled the type and frequency of content they produced, found a breath of fresh air to have more control over their work. OnlyFans put the entire process into the hands of the content creators and OF began gathering more and more creators producing intimate content, from the suggestive to the explicit.

But OnlyFans was never intended to cater only to sex work content producers, and some sex workers claim they have been purged from the site. In an ongoing effort to move away from a sex work platform, OF has reportedly been purging the accounts of sex workers at random. NY Post reports that content creators who have followed the rules are having their accounts closed without warning or explanation. Ultimately, though, the platform remains open for the majority of sex workers and those creating content in other arenas.

Thorne’s father died when she was 9, and her family moved to California so the aspiring actress could pursue a career in acting. Time to leave Disney roots behind

Thorne soon felt ready to shake her Disney roots. In a 2016 interview with Nylon, the then-18-year-old opened up about her reasons for shrugging the Disney mantle.  In the interview, Thorne said, “Finally, when I got off the [Disney] Channel, I stopped listening to people telling me that I needed to be this and that. I literally would talk with a higher voice in interviews because that was the whole innocent Disney appeal.”

Thorne reflected, “[I think] my fans are going to love me and stick with me whether I’m wearing a crop top and a short skirt or not.”

Thorne was right; fans loved her edgy and grown-up new look

Those words would prove prophetic as Thorne put her fans’ devotion to the test with the launch of her OnlyFans account. Her words rang true, and fans flocked to her page by the thousands. A week after launch, Thorne reports that she’s made about $2 million. Thorne, who offers intimate but not explicit content so far, told the Los Angeles Times that she has another reason for launching her account; research for an upcoming movie. The former Disney star is appearing in a film directed by the same director who is responsible for movies like The Florida Project and Tangerine. Thorne told the LA Times, “It’s a feature we are researching as I’m living it currently. What are the ins and outs? What does a platform like this do to its users? What’s the connective material between your life and your life inside the world of OnlyFans? … How can it change your life for the worse and the better? How far are you willing to go, and how far do you WANT to go? You can be me, or this talented girl from Montana, and OnlyFans could change your life — if you want it to, of course.”

Other celebrities have jumped on the OF bandwagon

Thorne joins a long line of celebrities who have launched OnlyFans accounts in order to control the content they provide fans and profit from it. Jason Derulo and Cardi Bboth have popular accounts, and pop diva Beyonce mentioned the website in a song. Within 24 hours of the Queen Bey shout-out, traffic to the website had increased by over 15%.

On track to make several cool million

With a strong start like Thorne has seen to her OnlyFans career, she can’t help but make money. Even if the 22-year-old walked away today, she’d be bringing a cool several million dollars with her. However long her research for her movie lasts, or Thorne’s desire to produce content remains, OnlyFans will continue to be a lucrative creative outlet for the former Disney star.
