In a report released on July 20, 2023, Senator Chuck Grassley unveiled a document detailing a bribery scheme involving President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, in relation to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. According to an unnamed informant businessman, Burisma’s founder was allegedly pressured by then-Vice President Joe Biden to appoint Hunter Biden to the company’s board. In exchange for using Biden’s political influence to force the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating Burisma, the scheme involved $10 million in bribes, with $5 million each to Joe and Hunter Biden.

The Ukrainian prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, was ultimately dismissed by the Ukrainian government shortly after Vice President Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion in U.S. funding unless Shokin was fired. Biden later boasted about this threat in a 2018 interview at the Council on Foreign Relations.

The FBI was informed of the bribery information in 2017 by the informant through a series of meetings. The details were summarized in a Form 1023, which was subject to a dispute between the House Oversight Committee and the FBI. Senator Grassley, however, obtained the document through legally protected disclosures by Justice Department whistleblowers.

The report implicates Burisma’s CEO, Mykola Zlochevsky, who allegedly admitted to paying $5 million each to Hunter and Joe Biden for their influence, a common practice in Eastern European circles. Zlochevsky claimed to possess 17 recordings incriminating the Bidens in the bribery scheme.

The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, has been urging the FBI to provide an explanation regarding the investigation into these allegations. Meanwhile, the committee’s ongoing probe indicates millions of dollars from foreign actors were transferred to various family members, including Hunter Biden, through a complex web of shell companies and LLCs, starting when Joe Biden was Vice President.

President Biden has denied any involvement in his son’s business dealings, but records show he had meetings with individuals connected to Burisma while he was Vice President. The report raises serious concerns about potential corruption and influence peddling involving the Bidens and their ties to Burisma.
