Breaking Bad Stars Celebrate the Earth With Dos Hombres

Breaking Bad stars Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston created a Mezcal "[they] thought was perfect." Hand-selected from the hillsides of a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico is the finest Espadin agave used to create award-winning Dos Hombres Mezcal.

The dynamic duo has shared some of their eco-conscious initiatives and sustainable practices for Earth Day and also, every day.

Emerging From A Hidden Place

The best agaves in the world are cultivated in a remote section of Oaxaca, Mexico. The small village of San Luis del Rio is blessed with rich soil and adequate rainfall and is the home to proud Mezcal producers. And, Dos Hombres is a product of just that.

The process of creating this award-winning spirit has five steps

  1. Harvest
  2. Cooking
  3. Milling
  4. Fermentation
  5. Distillation

Step One: Harvest

Before being ready for harvest, Espadin agave must be grown for at least six years. The leaves are cut off in the fields and the plant's pina is dug up.

Step Two: Cooking

The root balls (or pineapples) are chopped into quarters then places into earthen pits of hot stones and covered with soil. baking the agave for four days bring our their natural sugars.

Step Three: Milling

The sweet fruit is then transferred to a round, above-ground put, where a traditional stone wheel, usually pulled by a donkey, breaks down the cooked agave into a mash.

Step Four: Fermentation

The mashed agave is put into wooden tubs of mountain spring water. The mash becomes a "tepache" after being left to ferment over seven to ten days.

Step Five:

The tepache is loaded into copper stills, heated to an exact temperature, and watched carefully over the next two days as it slowly drips into a basin. And, the result of that is a smooth and delicious Mezcal.

When you put your nose to the bottle you'll get aromas of apples and Espadin agave that it perfectly balanced. You'll also smell a hint of mango for a hidden freshness and subtle sweetness.

The taste will have a soft hint of the wooden barrels in which the Mezcal is fermented. And, the flavor will finish off with a discrete smokiness.

Taking Action Earth Day and Every Day

Paul and Cranston took the time to share how they treat every day like Earth Day with these eco-conscious initiatives.

Local Water Purification Facility

  • with a dedication to making a positive impact in the San Luis del Rio community, where the mezcal is produced, Dos Hombres constructed and donated a water filtration system in September 2021 for the people of the town.

Repurposing Water

  • Dos Hombres built a cooling system to treat the water used to cool the copper stills during distillation so this water may be repurposed, to reduce the amount of water usage required for alcohol production.

Natural Process

  • As a sustainable spirit, Dos Hombres utilizes only the highest quality local agave and sources only natural soil to be treated with natural fertilizers. There is no electricity used in the process of making Mezcal, however, Dos Hombres has installed solar panels nearby so that as the sun begins to set it is easier to see.

Replanting

  • In addition to the Espadin Mezcal, Dos Hombres also offers an extremely limited Tobala bottling. Tobala has to be found in the wild and matured for at least 25 years before it can be harvested. For each Tobala that Dos Hombres discovers, they plant two more in its place giving back to the earth.

Earth day is annually and globally celebrated on April 22 in support of environmental protection.
