The Presidency revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa, scheduled for next month.
According to the Presidency’s statement, both parties have reached a mutual agreement regarding Putin’s absence. Instead, the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Mr. Sergey Lavrov.
The decision comes amidst a warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for President Putin, alleging war crimes committed during his invasion of Ukraine. South Africa is obligated by law to enforce the ICC’s warrant, which means that if Putin were to enter the country, he would be subject to arrest.
