For 13 long years, Britney Spears has been living what most of us would consider to be a nightmare in a gilded cage. Following a high-profile mental breakdown, Spears’ care was given over to father Jamie Spears in the form of a conservatorship. It allowed Jamie nearly total control over every move in the pop superstar’s life. But as the years passed, Britney grew more desperate to shake her shackles and get back to life as a free woman. That freedom may be just on the the other side of what she hopes will be the last hearing before dissolving the conservatorship. If all goes as planned, what will life be like for Spears on the other side? After 13 years in someone else’s control, what does Britney want for Britney?

UPDATE 9/30/21

Jamie Out; Hearing in November

Spears fans have about another month and a half to wait to find out of the conservatorship will end. Yesterday, Judge Brenda Penny ruled that Jamie being in charge of his daughter’s conservatorship was not going well, and she removed him. “This situation is not tenable,” and Penny added, “This situation is toxic.” The revelation that Jamie may have used recording equipment in his daughter’s private rooms such as her bedroom underscores his unfitness to be in charge now, whatever he may have done right in the beginning.

Penny could have either done what she did and remove Jamie, end the conservatorship, or do neither. So yesterday was a win. Britney’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, said that they accomplished what they set out to do. Per NBC, “Rosengart told reporters and fans after the hearing that the ruling was a ‘substantial step toward [Britney Spears’] freedom.’ He described the last ten years of his client’s life to be a ‘Kafkaesque nightmare.’

‘The goal today was to suspend Jamie Spears. That’s what today was about,’ Rosengart said. ‘And that’s what happened in court today. We expect the ultimate termination will be, as I said in my filing earlier this week, this fall. Specifically by Nov. 12, which is the next hearing date.’”

While they await the next hearing, accountant John Zabel will take over the conservatorship.

The Hearing it All Hinges On

Today, Britney and Jamie will go to court to potentially end the conservatorship. After a very public effort from the #FreeBritney movement, the pop star was given a chance to speak in court. And what she said broke hearts everywhere; she was desperate to get out. Jamie controlled her every move. From preventing her from having more children, to cabinet paint color, financial decisions and more – Jamie’s control of the conservatorship was on the authoritarian end of things. Some of his actions, such as putting audio recording devices in her private rooms, may have even violated her rights and the law.

So with public pressure mounting and Britney finding her voice again, Jamie finally gave in and filed to end the conservatorship on September 7th. At that time, per NBC, “James ‘Jamie’ Spears’ petition to Los Angeles County Superior Court, seen by NBC News, says his daughter ‘is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.’ The filing went on to say Britney Spears’ circumstances have changed ‘to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist.’

His petition also argued that probate code doesn’t require Britney Spears to undergo a new psychological evaluation to terminate the guardianship, which she told the court she refuses to do. The conservatorship has helped Ms. Spears get through a major life crisis, rehabilitate and advance her career, and put her finances and her affairs in order. But recently, things have changed,’ the filing said. ‘Ms. Spears is now outspoken in her frustration with the level of control imposed by a conservatorship, and has pleaded with this Court to ‘let her have her life back.’”

It could all end today.

Personal Life After

So once she’s free again, what does the now-13-years-old pop star want to do with her life? Well, she’s definitely getting married. 2 weeks ago, Spears shared on her Instagram a joyful video showing off a brand new shiny rock. Sam Asghari, Spears’ long-time boyfriend, finally popped the question now that her freedom is looming and they could potentially actually tie the knot. And of course, Spears said yes.

What about more children? Spears already has 2 with ex-husband Kevin Federline. Spears’ kids are about 15 and 16 now and her relationship with them has been fraught because of the conservatorship and her limits to mother freely. Federline has majority custody, but that could change with the end of the conservatorship. Spears’ had a contraceptive IUD placed against her wishes (which a lawyer overseeing the case has denied), and now it looks like she may be ready to remove that and get on with the business of having more babies.

Per Fox via Yahoo!, “Britney Spears and her fiancé Sam Asghari goofed around on Instagram this week about having a child together.

The recently engaged couple further fueled speculation that they want to expand their tribe when Asghari posted an Instagram Story showing the two playing around with a baby doll.

‘Exclusive! We had a baby,’ Asghari captioned the video with laughing emojis. ‘What should we name her?’ he added.

The video showed Spears, 39, at home dancing with a doll over her shoulders. ‘Oh, look at that! You look just like each other,’ Asghari cracked as Spears planted a kiss on the doll’s cheek.”

But are they just being playful and feeding into the internet rumor mill, or hinting at what comes next? Given the fact that Spears has said openly that she would like to have more babies, we’re going with the latter.

What’s Next for Her Career?

But what happens to her storied pop superstar status? Spears likely isn’t going anywhere. Part of the argument against keeping her in the conservatorship was the grueling pace she kept on tour and doing Vegas residencies. If she was capable of maintaining that level of involvement and activity, why couldn’t she pay her own bills or make her own life decisions? Clearly, it didn’t add up.

Once she’s free, the star is likely to take a gentle step back, though. Since getting some wiggle room in her life after speaking out in court this Summer, Spears has spent a lot of time just playing around. Finally getting to enjoy the perks of the life she worked so hard to create. Spears and Asghari have been traveling a lot, and making plans. So while she’s likely to keep doing what she loves and is so good at doing – maybe she’ll take a little break, or at least give herself some more down time.

You’ve more than earned it, Britney!
