Britney Spears Announces Pregnancy Months After Being Released from Conservatorship

Pop superstar Britney Spears is doing it again – baby, one more time. The superstar has announced on social media late today that she is pregnant with fiancé (or husband?) Sam Asghari. This comes just months after a judge granted Spears freedom from a nearly-13-year conservatorship under the draconian guidance of her father, Jamie Spears. Spears has spoken for months about how much she wants to have another baby – and now, it appears she's getting her chance.

Oops, She Did It Again – In the Best Way Possible

Spears took to social media late Monday to announce the good news. In a post on Instagram, Spears shared an image of a teacup and roses, with the caption, "I lost so much weight to go on my Maui trip only to gain it back ‍♀️ ‍♀️ ‍♀️ … I thought “Geez … what happened to my stomach ???” My husband said “No you’re food pregnant silly !!!” So I got a pregnancy test … and uhhhhh well … I am having a baby ."

The caption continues, "… 4 days later I got a little more food pregnant It’s growing !!! If 2 are in there … I might just loose it … I obviously won’t be going out as much due to the paps getting their money shot of me like they unfortunately already have … it’s hard because when I was pregnant I had perinatal depression … I have to say it is absolutely horrible … women didn’t talk about it back then … some people considered it dangerous if a woman complained like that with a baby inside her … but now women talk about it everyday … thank Jesus we don’t have to keep that pain a reserved proper secret … This time I will be doing yoga ‍♀️ every day !!! Spreading lots of joy and love !!!"

It is likely that Spears' public breakdown in the late '00's was precipitated at least in part by perinatal or postpartum depression, she will need to be monitored carefully both during and in the months following delivery. For now though, it's a time for celebration. Spears and her partner Asghari have talked publicly about their desire to have a baby, after Spears feels like years of motherhood were stolen from her with her older children, who were raised by ex-husband Kevin Federline.

It's unknown whether Spears and Asghari actually tied the knot in a secret beach wedding – but given her use of the word "husband" in her post, we can probably put that rumor to bed for good as "verified."

Under the Conservatorship, Britney Could Not Get Pregnant

This news is a wonderful break for Spears, months after the judge granted her freedom. As she appealed to the court to release her from her father's care, she spoke about how she was forced to use an IUD (intra-uterine device) to prevent pregnancy and really wanted to have a baby.

Her heartbreaking words touched hearts everywhere, and sparked a debate about reproductive rights. Is birth control within the realm of a conservatorship's power? Legally, the answer seems to be – mostly yes. But the ethics of it are a little more murky. After all, Spears was performing high-demand Vegas shows and appearing on television. Is it fair to say she couldn't raise a child?

This argument about Spears' demanding professional schedule held up in contrast to the lack of freedom she was given by her father may have been a good part of why she was ultimately freed from the conservatorship. After all, someone can't be both utterly capable of being a consummate professional and performer but unable to choose the paint color for their own cabinets.

For now, Spears and Asghari get to celebrate – they're welcoming a new life together, just as they've been given the chance to start a new life together. It's the perfect crowning glory of their new start. Congrats, Britney!
