Tiger King’s Carole Baskin has opened up about her sexuality, coming out as bisexual. The unlikely cat rescue superstar is under scrutiny for the disappearance of her ex-husband, but now reveals that either of her husbands could just as easily have been wives. CELEB reached out to Baskin and got her thoughts on her coming out.
Carole Discovered LGBTQ Community Connection in the 80’s
Speaking to Pink News just weeks after being eliminated from Dancing With the Stars, Baskin opened up about how she first realized her sexuality. Per Pink News, “Baskin said she was first immersed in the queer community when she was engaged to a psychologist who worked with LGBT+ people in the 1980s.
The Tiger King star said: ‘I was engaged to a psychologist, and that was his entire field, dealing with the LGBT+ community.
‘It was during the period when AIDS was just wreaking havoc around the world, and people were losing their loved ones, and so I became very close to people in that community then.'”
Carole Grew Up a Tomboy
Baskin told Pink News that she, “felt that she was ‘probably born into the wrong body’ because she was such a ‘tomboy.’
‘I was always very male-oriented in the things I did… I never had any mothering instincts or anything, you know, I never played with dolls. And so I always thought that there was something off there, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
‘But it was during the ’80s that I discovered that through dealing with the LGBT+ community that I [realised] I had just as equal feelings for women as I did for men.’”
CELEB Spoke with Carole
CELEB wanted to speak directly with Baskin about her feelings on coming out, and reached out. Baskin responded, “I’ve had lovers of both sexes and I had a non sexual ‘wife’ as well. We loved each other in a platonic way and she took care of the cooking, the house, and helped me with my real estate business by answering the phones, filing, etc.”
However, the relationship was not romantic. Baskin continued, “…she was heterosexual and I respected that boundary. (And no, I’m not going to reveal her name because I don’t know where she is now and I don’t know if she’d want to be hassled by the media).”
Regarding gender or sex when it comes to falling in love, Baskin feels that people are confusing the issue. “You miss the point entirely if you try to make this about sex, or gender, or race, or nationality, because my point is that we aren’t any of those things when we recognize we are all of those things. We are all connected. We are all ONE.”
Coming Out Isn’t Reconciling Carole with Joe Exotic
TMZ reports that Baskin still has some strong feelings about Tiger King co-star and cat rescue competitor Joe Exotic. According to Baskin, Exotic is not a good ambassador for the LGBTQ community. Baskin told Pink News, “I think he’s an embarrassment to the human community. It’s not a matter of what your sexuality is, this man is just a deviant in the way that he treats human life and animal life.”
