Fans who have followed Teen Mom OG stars Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra‘s story for a while now, know that they placed their first daughter, Carly, up for adoption. This was covered when their first episode of Sixteen and Pregnant aired eleven years ago.
Last night, Catelynn took to her Instagram to reflect on the episode, writing that “Having our episode of 16 and pregnant is something so special to me… and one day will be so special to Carly… still haven’t watched our episode for going on 11 years… to hard to watch but one day I know I will be sitting next to Carly watching it and talking with her about our story…. man what a crazy ride.”
CELEB spoke exclusively with Catelynn about Carly all these years later and how she and Tyler still deal with emotions surrounding placing their first-born up for adoption.
An Emotional Ride
“When Tyler and I went on 16 and Pregnant 11 years ago,” Catelynn began by sharing with CELEB, “we had no idea of the ride we were going to be in for both emotionally and in the world of Teen Mom. We had zero clue that one episode would lead us to still being on a TV show all these years later with fans and supporters who are still so invested in our lives.”
“We appreciate each and every one of you more than you know,” Catelynn continued sharing. “Even the haters and critics we have learned to appreciate, as you still are invested in our lives and have helped us to grow.”
Catelynn then addressed the Sixteen and Pregnant episode she and Tyler were on, stating that “With that being said, we still can’t watch the episode of 16 and Pregnant since it aired. Placing Carly for adoption was one of the hardest decisions we ever had to make. While we remain forever grateful to Brandon and Teresa for stepping up to the plate to give Carly the life we couldn’t back then- not to mention being amazing parents to her- it still is a hard thing to relive.”
It’s Hard Not To Wonder
Catelynn continued sharing that “Knowing what we have now and what life had in store for us, it’s hard not to wonder what that would have looked like if Carly had been along for the ride with us. There is always a sense of wonder that never goes away and gnaws at both of us.”
“No matter how you look at it- and we look back knowing we made the right decision at that time- it’s still a difficult thing to deal with,” Catelynn added.
Catelynn then addressed a hard topic- namely, whether she thinks Carly may resent her and Tyler in the future, seeing as they went on to have more kids and have a long-lived time in the spotlight on Teen Mom.
To this, Lowell detailed that “Many have asked us in the past if we think Carly will resent us in the future potentially because of Nova and Vaeda and being on Teen Mom, etc. We don’t choose to think that at all. We know Brandon and Teresa have been open with Carly from as early as she could understand with who we are and why we did what we had to do.”
“As a mother and father,” Lowell continued, “placing a child for adoption is never, ever something you WANT to do. It is the most selfless thing you can do. If we wanted to be selfish at the time, 100% we would have kept Carly and attempted to raise her ourselves, but we were not in the right place in so many facets of our lives that Carly wouldn’t have the amazing life she has today.”
The Life She Deserved
Catelynn also told CELEB that “Both of us hope that, as Carly continues to grow, she will know that we love her just as much as we love Nova and Vaeda and we will always be here for her and that we did what we had to do because of how much we loved her.”
Catelynn also reiterated her Instagram post, sharing that “One day we hope to sit next to her and re-watch the episode of 16 and Pregnant with her by our sides and that will be a really pivotal moment for all of us to experience together as a family. We hope to explain to her what was going through our heads every step of the way in hopes that she will understand us better as well.”
“Carly will always be our daughter and Brandon and Teresa’s daughter and we remain forever grateful for everything they’ve done for her and how they allowed us to give her the life she deserved,” Catelynn elaborated. “It doesn’t make it any easier, though, when looking back at that time and when stuff is reposted about that episode.”
Stronger Than Ever
Catelynn wrapped with sharing that “While this is a pain that never goes away, we still could not be happier to be able to have an open adoption with Brandon and Teresa and get to watch Carly grow into the beautiful young woman she is becoming.”
“While Tyler and I have had bumps in the road,” Catelynn added, “looking back on these 11 years really proves the cliche saying- what doesn’t kill you makes us stronger. And we are stronger than ever.”
