A Look Back At The Biggest Celebrity Splits That Have Rocked 2020 So Far
When news hit the web that Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich had called off their engagement only two months after the actor had popped
When news hit the web that Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich had called off their engagement only two months after the actor had popped the question, fans were left pretty shook.
“It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” a source close to the pair told People Magazine about the split. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”
The High School Musical 3 alum later confirmed the breakup via his Instagram Stories, and he even claimed that he found out that the “Sober” songstress wanted to end their relationship by reading about it online! Yikes!
“Imagine finding out… the status of your relationship through a tabloid,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories. “While you’re in the middle of filming a biopic movie about a pastor in a Christian church whose intention of the film is to help people.”
It turns out, they’re not the only celebrity couple that called it quits in 2020. Yep, a lot of stars decided to go their separate ways this year, and we decided to round up the splits that shook us the most.
Tana Mongaeu And Jake Paul
The two YouTubers completely shocked the world when they announced that they were engaged in July 2019 (after only three months of dating). They got married a few weeks later, and luckily for us, they documented the entire thing via social media! But on January 2, 2020, they announced that they taking a break.
“OK, I don’t really know how to do a ‘we’re taking a break’ post and this is weird as f**k… I’m happy to still be able to sit with Jake and laugh as we do this — but for right now we both are taking a break to focus on our own very crazy lives,” Mongeau wrote on Instagram at the time. “I’ll never know what the future holds and iI will always love Jake and everything we did. I’m grateful to know throughout this I’ve made a best friend for life and found someone to do life with when no one understood me. Here’s to 2020, working on us, and my new Lamborghini since I get half of everything! No need for crazy speculations — this is coming from a place of nothing but love. I love you, Jakey, thank you for this past year.”
Jeffree Star And Nathan Schwandt
Star and Schwandt were together for five years before they went their separate ways in January 2020.
“I feel like I owe you all an explanation because Nathan and I have grown with each other in front of all of you and I can’t believe he’s not here right now. But I do want to share what’s been going on,” the makeup mogul explained in a YouTube video. “I’m grateful for him, and I’ll be grateful until the day I die, because this was the only man that was ever confident enough to love me publicly, to love me for me fully, all my flaws, no makeup waking up in bed to full-on — he never cared about any of it, he just loved me for me.”
As for why they split, Star added, “He never wanted to be famous, he never wanted to be in the spotlight, he never wanted attention, but he loved and believed in everything I was doing and was a part of it because I asked him to. My life is so public and I think it just got to a breaking point where it just wasn’t healthy.”
Vanessa Hudgens And Austin Butler
Us Weekly confirmed that the couple had called it quits in January 2020. And according to E! News, it was their busy schedules that caused them to go their separate ways. A source told the outlet, “They’re just shooting on two different continents and it’s a matter of distance. There is no bad blood at all, and they have a lot of respect for each other.”
They first started dating all the way back in September 2011, and fans were seriously living for their nine-year relationship.
Pete Davidson And Kaia Gerber
Davidson and Gerber were linked back in October 2019, but in January 2020, fans started to speculate that they had split. The Saturday Night Live writer later opened up about their breakup, explaining that his mental health ultimately let to their downfall.
“We were dating for a few months. She’s very young, and I’m f**king going through a lot,” he said. “It’s just like, she should be having fun. She shouldn’t have to worry about some dude that just has issues and s**t. She should be enjoying her work.”
Rihanna And Hassan Jameel
The singer and her beau of three years reportedly broke up in early 2020. Although she never spoke out about the split directly, Rihanna seemingly opened up about the way the relationship changed her during an interview with Vogue.
“Since I turned 32, I’m realizing life is really short,” she dished. “You don’t have a lot of time to tolerate s**t, you know? You put so much on your plate. When you’re overwhelmed, you need to start cutting things out. And I’m overwhelmed too much. What’s happening now is that I’m going back to black and white. My grey area is shutting down.”
Zac Efron And Sarah Bro
Efron and Bro, who is an olympic swimmer, kept their relationship pretty private. But on January 29, 2020, Us Weekly confirmed that they had split.
“The relationship just wasn’t working out,” a source told them. “She came back to L.A., and it never got going again.”
Madelaine Petsch And Travis Mills
The former couple announced that they were going their separate ways back in February 2020, after three years together.
“I’ve had to accept there’s no possible way to capture a love of this scale or its significance to me, in a few paragraphs. That said, I’ll try, because so many of you supported us over the years like a family would. So here it goes,” Mills shared in an Instagram post at the time. “Our relationship has been in the public eye for the last three years. What’s ironic about my most public relationship is that behind the scenes it was the most non-superficial and grounding experience in my life. While it pains me our journey has come to a close, I mean it when I say I’m so incredibly grateful to have shared the last three years with someone as compassionate, smart and wonderful as Madelaine. The personal growth made possible by our time together I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
He continued, “Red carpets, parties, photoshoots, TV, etc. create this alternate reality where we are one-dimensional people, free of real world challenges, kicking our feet up, waiting for the next big job. I wish our lives really looked like a google image search of our names. In reality we’re ambitious and hard-working individuals, dealing with rejection, in different states/countries, wondering what the next best move is, trying to see friends/family, take care of our dogs, answering an ocean of e-mails, balancing REAL LIFE and doing it all while being separated by it. There’s a ton of privilege being able to do what we do, but there’s a mountain of challenges. That said we were in it together. It challenged me, kept me honest, made me more compassionate and helped me do some very necessary growing up. The highest highs were made better, the lowest lows were livable, because of her. I’ve learned so much about myself and life from that unconditional love and support.”
Noah Centineo And Alexis Ren
The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before star and the Dancing With the Stars alum confirmed they were dating in October 2019. They became total couple goals after that — constantly sharing cute pics together and gushing over each other in interviews — which is why when news hit the web that they were done in April 2020, fans were shocked.
“They broke up a few weeks ago,” a source told Us Weekly at the time.
Halsey And Evan Peters
Fans started to speculate that Halsey and Peters had called it quits after she started posting a lot of photos with her ex-boyfriend Yunbglud in March 2020. She also took down some of her photos with the American Horror Story actor, seemingly confirming that their relationship was over.
Channing Tatum And Jessie J
Everyone was pretty excited when Tatum and J got back together in January 2020. But just three months later, People Magazinereported that they split for a second time. A source explained, “They cared enough about each other to try again but realized it was better to move on. It’s totally amicable.”
Lily-Rose Depp And Timothée Chalamet
It’s over for Depp and Chalamet. They went their separate ways in April 2020, after dating for more than a year. At the time, they didn’t address the breakup, but the actor did confirmed that he was indeed single during an interview with British Vogue one month later. And now, it looks like he’s already moved on from the model! Yep, the actor was caught packing on the PDA with Eiza González during a romantic trip to Mexico in June 2020.
Charli D’Amelio And Chase Hudson
On April 14, 2020, the couple confirmed that they had split via Instagram.
“I decided I needed to tell you all that we are no longer together. It hurts me to say this, but we’ve decided that this is what’s best for the both of us,” the TikTok star wrote on her Stories. “We are still close friends and I would not change that for anything! I truly have so much love for Chase and with nothing but the best for him!”
Hudson added in a post of his own, “Charli and I wanted to share with you all that while we will alway shave love for each other, we are no longer together. Charli is such an amazing person and I am so beyond grateful and blessed to have spent the time I spent with her. We Weill always be friends and she will always hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life.”
Cara Delevingne And Ashley Benson
We really thought Delevingne and Benson were going to be together forever! They dated for more than two years before splitting in May 2020.
“This split is not surprising to Ashely and Cara’s inner circle,” a source told Life & Style at the time. “The thing is that no one wanted it to be true. They were great together, a dynamic duo and everyone loved having them around. That’s why this is so hard.”
It looks like there’s no bad blood between them, however, because after the Pretty Little Liars star was spotted smooching G-Eazy, Delevingne stuck up for her on her Instagram Stories.
“To everyone hating on [Ashley], please stop,” the 27-year-old wrote. “You don’t know the truth. Only her and I do and that’s exactly how it should be.”
Kenzie Ziegler And Isaak Presley
“I’ve been seeing a lot of comments asking if Isaak and I are together, just because right now we are not together,” Ziegler said during an Instagram Live on May 4, 2020. “I had to act like we were OK because I didn’t want you guys to hate on him or anything. He didn’t do anything, I didn’t do anything, we’re just both not at a good mental state right now. We just decided to be friends right now. It’s super hard because I love him a lot. I hope it’ll get better and that we’re both going to be OK but we can’t be together right now.”
They first confirmed that they were dating in August 2019, and fans were so sad about the split.
Annie LeBlanc And Asher Angel
LeBlanc confirmed that she and Angel had split on May 13, 2020.
“It breaks my heart to write this, but Asher and I have broken up. It’s no ones fault, especially not his. He treated me exactly the way a girl should be treated and deserves no hates. He will always hold a special place in my heart and I wish him nothing but the best,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories. “I hope you guys will understand and continue to support and love us both.”
The actor later opened up about their breakup during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, and he admitted that he was “heartbroken.”
“It’s been very hard. It’s been hard for me, it’s been hard for my family,” he said. “You know, quarantine has been tough. I haven’t seen her in 75 days, I mean, that’s not easy on any kind of relationship. And we’re young, we’re teenagers, so we were seeing each other every other day and all of a sudden, that’s just taken away from us. That was super hard. I’m heartbroken.”
He continued, “I love her so much. She was… she’s my everything. She is my rock, she means the world to me. I was trying to be optimistic about the whole thing, and think that she would maybe come back, or she just needed some time and space. That’s my kind of approach to it because it just didn’t seem real. But as soon as it was announced, that’s just where I was just, ugh, I was just devastated. I finally knew that it was real, that it was actually happening. I think the most important thing is I just want her heart to be happy. That’s the biggest thing. As long as her heart’s happy, I’m happy. I’m always going to be here for her and her family, and I believe she knows that.”
Scott Disick And Sofia Richie
News hit the web that Disick and Richie were over on May 27, 2020. E! News confirmed the shocking split, with a source telling them, “They are technically ‘split’ but Sofia has been in touch with Scott. There wasn’t a fight or anything bad that happened between them. Sofia simply wishes to do her own thing while Scott take[s] care of his health.”
Kelly Clarkson And Brandon Blackstock
After six years of marriage, Clarkson filed for a divorce from Blackstock on June 4, 2020.
“Things had changed in their marriage and the split was a while coming. They both work so hard. It’s nearly impossible to enjoy each other, especially with the children needing constant attention,” a source told People Magazine. “Kelly’s been through a lot, and she thought Brandon was her happily ever after. It’s very sad.”
Vanessa Morgan And Michael Kopech
Just days after Morgan announced that she was expecting her first child, Kopech filed from divorce from the actress. According to Chicago Tribute, online court records show that the White Sox pitcher filed on June 19, 2020, in Morris County, TX.
“Was debating keeping this part of my life hidden, but I knew people would see pictures eventually with my belly [and] I wanted you guys to hear it from me,” the Riverdale star wrote on Instagram alongside her pregnancy announcement. “I do want to keep this chapter of my life private but did want to be the first to share the news. I am overjoyed to be welcoming my baby boy into the world this January. It’s almost like everything I thought mattered in this life has completely changed… We’re here for such a greater purpose and life is so precious. I can’t believe how much growth [and] strength you’ve already given me as your mom. It’s like God knew I needed you, my angel. The universe works in mysterious ways but always times everything the way it was meant to be. [Little] one you were made with so much love [and] already exude a light so strong it warms my belly. Thank you God for this blessing. I’m just so happy [and] can’t wait to dedicate everyday to being the best mommy I can be.”
They first started dating back in July 2018. They then got married on January 4, 2020.
Griffin Johnson And Dixie D’Amelio
The TikTok couple was all anyone could talk about this summer, but in July 2020, news hit the web that they had ended their relationship. The breakup was pretty messy, and afterwards, they threw so much shade towards each other online. D’Amelio even accused Johnson of cheating on her, and get this — he responded by dropping a diss track about her!
Paris Jackson And Gabriel Glenn
After two years of dating, People Magazine confirmed that the pair had split on August 4, 2020. During a Facebook Watch episode, Jackson admitted that she and Glenn constantly “butted heads.”
“A big thing for Aries is we are very impatient, depending on what it is,” she said. “The people that we love and things that we care about, we have the patience of a saint. But it’s a very interesting dynamic. We both have double stubborn energy. I’ve always known I was stubborn, and I knew that he was stubborn because he’s a Taurus.”
Lili Reinhart And Cole Sprouse
“Lili and I initially separated in January of this year, deciding to more permanently split in March,” Sprouse announced on Instagram on August 19, 2020. “What an incredible experience I had, I’ll always feel lucky and cherish that I had the chance to fall in love. I wish her nothing but the utmost love and happiness moving forward. All I’ll say about it, anything else you hear doesn’t matter.”
As fans know, the pair met and fell for each other on set of Riverdale, and they were together for almost three years before breaking up.
Miley Cyrus And Cody Simpson
Cyrus and Simpson started dating in October 2019, and they quickly became total couple goals. But in August 2020, the former Hannah Montana star revealed that they were no longer together.
“Today, it came out that me and my boyfriend had broken up. It was ‘confirmed by a reliable source,’ although no one is reliable in a relationship, except the two individuals participating in it. But for right now, two halves cannot make a whole and we’re individually just working on ourselves to become the people that we want to be,” she explained during an Instagram Live. “Like everyone else at this age, we’re deciding who we want to be and what we want to do with our lives. So don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re spotted hanging out or getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years and will continue to be friends. Don’t make it something that it is not.”
Dianna Agron And Winston Marshall
After three years of marriage, multiple sources told Us Weekly that the pair had split on August 19, 2020.
“They have been living separately since last year,” one source told the outlet. “[Dianna] is dating.”
Cardi B And Offset
Everyone was shocked when the rapper confirmed that she was ending her marriage to Offset. She lated admitted during an Instagram Live that she “got tired of not seeing things eye to eye.”
She also said it had nothing to do with cheating.
“Nothing crazy out of this world happened, sometimes people really do grow apart. I been with this man for four years. I have a kid with this man, I have a household with this man…sometimes you’re just tired of the arguments and the build up. You get tired sometimes and before something happens, you leave,” she added.
