Don’t worry, you guys — Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline are not broken up. Yep, the couple just confirmed that they’re still dating, after rumors started to spread that they had gone their separate ways. For those who missed it, Instagram account Deuxmoi recently posted that the pair had split “weeks ago,” and an insider even told them that they saw Stokes at a party where he “kept flirting” with different girls and “looked very much single.”
However, Cline seemed to put these rumors to rest when her beau celebrated his 29th birthday on September 16, 2021. She posted a series of adorable, PDA-filled pics of her and Stokes to her Instagram Stories, proving they’re still going strong!
“Happiest birthday to you, nerd,” she captioned them. So cute!
As fans know, the two stars met on set of the Netflix series Outer Banks, and since their characters were total goals in the show, when they took their love off the screen and into real life, it was seriously a dream come true! But wait, when exactly did they start dating, you ask? How long have they been together? And how did they go from costars to lovers? Not to worry, you guys, because we went ahead and broke down their entire romance from start to finish for you. Here’s their complete relationship timeline…
It All Started In April 2020
Their adorable relationship started in April 2020 while they were filming Outer Banks, and according to Cline, their chemistry on set came naturally.
“I think there is such thing as a love that just absolutely takes over and it flips your world upside down,” she told Seventeen, while discussing their characters, John B and Sarah Cameron’s love story. “I remember when I was a teenager, I was into young adult books and there was always a pinnacle love story of star-crossed lovers. So to be able to be a part of creating that for this next generation was really a dream come true as a storyteller.”
The actress continued, “Chase, [our creator] Jonas [Pate] and I all sat down from the get-go and spoke about the relationship. We wanted to make sure it was real and it had depth to it. There were things that Chase and I specifically added to the script that felt personal. You have to sell it. It’s got to be compelling. Thankfully the cast all clicked and we had such great chemistry, so we all had this friendship from the very beginning. So building on that and then projecting it on the screen felt very, very real.”
Stokes explained that while preparing for the roles, they spent a lot of time getting to know each other so that they could really connect on screen.
“We decided to strip away the layers of the physicality of it and focus more on the intellectual connection between the two of them. John B. and Sarah obviously don’t have the same upbringing. They fall in love not because of what their worlds bring, it’s about what their emotional connection is,” he explained to Nylon. “We just really wanted to make sure that Maddie and I became good enough friends to where we knew each other and find little ticks and nuances that would make each other laugh, and make sure we translated that into the performance.”
They Went Instagram Official In June 2020
Over the months, the two would leave flirty comments for each other on Instagram, and everyone started to wonder if something was going on between them. And finally, in June 2020, they made their love Instagram official! At the time, Stokes shared a snap of him and Cline having a romantic date on the beach, which he captioned, “Cats outta the bag.”
“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up,” Cline added in a comment.
Later during an Instagram Live, Stokes said he texted Cline and asked her if they should share their love with the world, and she replied, “I don’t care.”
“OK, but clarification, I thought he meant posting it at some point in the future. He didn’t clarify what time. He just said, ‘I think this would be a cute post at some point.’ So, I didn’t know!” she added.
After he shared the snap of them on the beach, the Netflix star texted her, “Oopsie.”
They Spent The Coronavirus Quarantine Together
Soon after they started dating, the world went into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the couple decided to quarantine together, which Stokes described as “an immediate test.”
“It’s like, ‘Hey, you’re dating. Guess what? Figure it out. You’re stuck,’” he told Us Weekly.
However, the 29-year-old later explained that quarantining together was what really concreted their relationship.
“It was just always work-oriented — really until the day we wrapped. It wasn’t until after that, until we started to kind of get into the lockdown where we were like, ‘Is there something here or am I crazy?’ That’s sort of where it bloomed from there. I think we were just so invested in the work,” he said in another interview.
In September 2020, they were still going strong. How do we know? Well, they starred in the music video for Kygo’s song “Hot Stuff” together, and boy, was it adorable! They packed on the PDA in the visual, and fans were living for it.
Plus, when Entertainment Tonight asked Cline if she was in love with Stokes in November 2020, she gushed, “Yeah, it’s really cool. Love is tight. It’s cool to share this experience with your favorite people and also your favorite person… I feel very happy.”
They Celebrated One Year Together In April 2021
April 2021 was a big month for the pair. Why? Well, it was their one-year anniversary!
“Thanks for helping me keep track of my belongings for a whole year,” Cline wrote on Instagram in honor of the big day. “Adore you.”
As for Stokes, he also shared a tribute for their anniversary. He captioned his post, “365 with you.”
One month later, they attended the MTV Movie and TV Awards together, and when they won the award for Best Kiss, they decided to share in a big ol’ smooch right there and then on stage!
Things Got Complicated When Filming For Season 2 Began
Things seemed picture perfect between them, but Cline explained that when they started filming for Season 2 of Outer Banks, it was a little complicated. But she “laid [out] the groundwork first and foremost.”
“I was like, ‘This is a big priority to me, and you know, from what I know based on how you work, it is for you too. But I want to make sure that we hold each other accountable and that we don’t bring anything personal that could potentially distract each other or our fellow cast mates on the day,’” the blonde beauty said on The Talk. “So, it wasn’t hard at all, and I really respect that about him and our relationship.”
In the end, filming Season 2 together definitely went well, and Stokes later told People how much fun he had working with his girlfriend.
“It’s been a lot of fun to drive together to work, come home and throw ideas off of each other about different scenes, collaborating, watching her get excited about her work and be her cheerleader,” he explained. “The beautiful thing for us is that our relationship was established as friends and coworkers prior to what we have now. The biggest difference now is I get to be even more proud of her as my partner when I watch her work.”
They really are so perfect for one another. We can’t wait to see what’s next for the couple!
