It’s over, you guys. Yep, two months after they announced that they were engaged, Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich have reportedly broken up. Us Weekly confirmed the devastating news on Thursday, September 23, and fans are seriously so bummed about it.
“It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” a source close to the pair told People Magazine about the split. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”
But wait, how did these two even meet? When did they start dating? And what exactly went wrong? We went ahead and broke down their entire love story from start to finish for you. Here’s a complete timeline of their relationship…
It All Started In March 2020
Fans first started to speculate that something was going on between the two stars in March 2015, after they were photographed spending some time together in Los Angeles, CA. At the time, an insider told Us Weekly that they had met “a few weeks ago” and that the relationship was “off to a start.”
In the weeks that followed, they left a few flirty comments for each other on social media, and the singer even made a surprise appearance during one of Ehrich’s Instagram Lives! Yeah, it was clear that they were spending a lot of time together. Then, on March 30, 2020, Lovato seemingly confirmed the relationship once and for all when she commented, “My angels,” on a picture the High School Musical 3 alum had shared of himself and Lovato’s dog.
Ehrich Was Lovato’s Biggest Fan
Fans were living in April 2020 when the actor referred to his girlfriend as “the best artist in the world” on his Instagram Stories. He also shared some screenshots of himself listening to her old albums — how cute is that?!
And get this — the 29-year-old was actually a huge fan of Lovato’s long before they met! Yep, the brunette beauty posted a screenshot of a message that he had shared to Twitter more than eight years before they started dating that read, “All I wanted for Christmas was Demi Lovato. #Cantalwaysgetwhatyouwant.”
“We love a little manifestation,” she captioned it.
She also supported his music online! While teasing some of his upcoming tunes, the star wrote on her Instagram Stories, “God I can’t wait for y’all to hear my FUTURE HUSBAND’s music. I’m so obsessed with everything about him. I love you honey and I’m SO PROUD.”
He replied, “I love you so much baby. Thank you for being my muse and I CANNOT wait for you to share your masterpiece of an album.”
Things Were Heating Up Between Them In May 2020
Lovato and Ehrich made a surprise appearance in the music video for Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber‘s song “Stuck On You” in May 2020, and they even kissed in it! After the visual hit the web, the former Disney star shared a clip from it to her Instagram account, and she let everyone know just how happy she was with Ehrich.
“Happy to be a part of something so special right now. Like really, REALLY happy if you can’t tell…” she wrote.
After that, they definitely weren’t afraid to show off their love! They both shared so many adorable pictures together and gushed over each other online nonstop, and everyone was living for it. The Camp Rock star even said she “loved” Ehrich on May 25, 2020.
“I now spend my days in a bathing suit with no makeup with someone who accepts and loves me for who I am, flaws and all,” she wrote on her Instagram Stories, alongside a cute selfie of them. “I love you @MaxEhrich.”
When Ehrich celebrated his birthday on June 24, 2020, the 28-year-old shared a super sweet tribute for him.
“BAAAYYBEEE — I have so much fun with you and there’s so many things I want to say right now but I want to be present and spend this bday with you so I’ll be quick,” she wrote. “Being with you makes life SO MUCH FUN. We literally act like hooligans on the daily and don’t give a F**K if we’re embarrassing ourselves if others are around! I spend my days with you, bare faced and in a bathing suit… I feel unconditionally loved and accepted by you in a way that I’ve never felt before… I can’t explain it or you… You’re indescribable, you beautiful man. Inside and out you are jaw-droppingly gorgeous… You’re also such a positive li’l beam of light in my life and I can’t wait to make more birthday memories together… Here’s to the future baby. I love you @maxehrich.”
Engagement Rumors Started To Swirl In July
Us Weekly reported in July 2020 that Ehrich was planning on asking Lovato to marry him!
“They’ve been talking about getting engaged,” a source told the outlet at the time. “Her family really likes him. He’ll likely propose within the next couple of months, but when quarantine is over. Demi has been aware and in on the fact that Max wants to propose and is so excited. They are really excited about their relationship and enjoying living together during quarantine and seeing where things go. They are very positive influences on each beyond just both being sober.”
Then, They Put A Ring On It
The couple announced their engagement on July 23, 2020.
“I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can’t describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too… I’ve never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life (other than my parents) flaws and all,” Lovato gushed on Instagram. “You never pressure me to be anything other than myself. And you make me want to be the best version of myself. I’m honored to accept your hand in marriage. I love you more than a caption could express but I’m ecstatic to start a family and life with you. I love you forever my baby. My partner. Here’s to our future!”
Ehrich added in his own post, “You are every love song, every film, every lyric, every poem, everything I could ever dream of and then some in a partner in life. Words cannot express how infinitely in love with you I am forever and always and then some. I cannot spend another second of my time here on Earth without the miracle of having you as my wife. Here’s to forever baby. I’m so excited you are the most beautiful inside and out in the entire world and I couldn’t be more grateful. God brought us together I LOVE YOU SO MUCH @ddlovato AND WILL FOREVER CHERISH YOUR PURE, BEAUTIFUL, INFINITE SOUL.”
Lovato Said Ehrich Changed Her
While speaking to Vogue in September 2020, the Sonny With a Chance alum opened up about how. the relationship helped make her mindset most positive.
“My fiancé is so positive all the time, I just started picking up on the things he does,” she explained. “I started meditating and doing yoga. I started journaling, painting, taking pictures and being creative, and learning to appreciate nature, after realizing I’d been taking it for granted all this time.”
So What Went Wrong?
A few weeks later, alleged old tweets posted by Ehrich long before he started dating Lovato surfaced online. Alleged screenshots showed the musician gushing over Lovato’s ex-best friend Selena Gomez. One seemingly read, “Hahaha Selena Gomez and Demi are cute together, but boy, if you think Demi is prettier…You’re WRONG!”
But according to the singer, the messages were not real! She took to her Instagram Stories to clear the air, writing, “It’s really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other…If women have conflict that’s between them NOT YOU.”
“While on one hand, I understand and have compassion for those who are so horrified at the reality of 2020 that they gotta distract themselves with doctored images in order to not focus on how bad these times are — but on the other hand, if you aren’t 13 years old trying to grasp the reality of right now, put on your adult underpants and write about what actually matters. Please,” she added.
But sources told E! News that she was “really upset” about the entire situation.
“She is head over heels for Max and doesn’t want to be heartbroken,” the insider added. “She truly cares about Max and wants to think his intentions are genuine. People close to Demi have expressed that they are worried and are hesitant about Max.”
Ehrich Claimed He Found Out About The Split Online
After news of their split hit the web, the actor took to his Instagram Stories to address it, and he claimed that he found out their engagement was over from articles he read online.
“Imagine finding out… the status of your relationship through a tabloid,” he wrote. “While you’re in the middle of filming a biopic movie about a pastor in a Christian church whose intention of the film is to help people.”
But a source told People Magazine, “Demi made Max aware that the relationship was over and it was going to come out in the press.”
Then, Ehrich doubled down on his claims.
“I was on the set of my new movie, Southern Gospel, with crew and cast members right next to me who literally watched me open my phone where I then opened a tabloid,” he wrote on Sunday, September 27 in another Instagram Stories post. “This is the God’s honest truth of how I found out about the ending of my engagement and have people from my film who saw the whole thing go down and helped me get back into character to continue my job.”
