Descendants Cast

It’s official, you guys — the Descendants cast is reprising their characters for a brand new animated special, called The Royal Wedding! The exciting news comes almost two years after the third and final movie from the series came out, and we are so happy that the characters will be back on our screens once again!

But wait, when will it come out? What’s it going to be about? Is the entire cast returning for the special? What will happen to Cameron Boyce‘s character? And is this going to be the end of Descendants? Not to worry, people, because we went ahead and broke it all down for you. Here’s everything you need to know…

What Do We Know About ‘The Royal Wedding?’

Descendants Cast

According to Variety, the special will feature Mal and King Ben’s royal wedding. Dove Cameron is going to return as Mal, Sofia Carson will return as Evie and Booboo Stewart is set to return as Jay. Plus, Mitchell Hope, Sarah Jeffery, Melanie Paxson, China Anne McClain, Jedidiah Goodacre, Anna Cathcart, Dan Payne, Bobby Moynihan and Cheyenne Jackson will all also reprise their roles.

Descendants introduced a fantasy world of stories and characters, anchored in Disney mythology. For the past six years, it captivated young viewers and grew to become among Disney Channel’s biggest entertainment franchises ever,” president and chief creative officer of Disney branded television, Gary Marsh, said in a statement. “It had the benefit of immensely talented stars, who we now welcome back for this animated ‘Royal Wedding’ special that will bridge the audience to what we hope will be a new chapter of compelling Descendants stories and characters yet to come.”

But what about Boyce’s character, Carlos de Vil, you ask? As fans know, the actor sadly passed away after suffering from a seizure in his sleep on July 6, 2019  — just one month before the third movie premiered.

“The absence of Carlos’ character will be acknowledged in the storyline and Boyce’s memory will be honored in the telecast,” the outlet reported.

There’s no release date for it just yet, but it’s reportedly going to air sometime this summer, and we can’t wait.

Will There Ever Be A ‘Descendants 4?’

When the third movie came out in 2019, many fans were left wondering — was this the last Descendants flick or will they make a fourth?! Well, unfortunately, you guys, at the time, the entire cast and crew made it pretty clear that it was the final movie in the series. And when Cameron was asked in an interview if she’d ever come back for another film, she had mixed feelings about it.

“What happened was so incredibly heart wrenching for all of us and something we could not recover from,” the blonde beauty admitted to HollywoodLife. “And so, I think that the idea of making another movie, while it would be nostalgic for all of us and while it would be healing in a lot of ways, it might also be super wrong. So it could go either way and it depends on how we’re all feeling and I think that the beautiful thing that Disney has done is that they have very much created a safe space for the cast to be wherever they’re at. They canceled everything when Cameron passed and I know they want what’s in all of our best interests, so we’ll see. I doubt it, but we’ll see.”

She also told Entertainment Tonight, “Yeah, I do think there is a world where [a fourth Descendants movie] happens. I don’t know anything for sure, but I definitely don’t think that that’s an impossibility. There is nothing that I can say for sure, but I definitely can say that it is not out of the question! I don’t love the idea of doing it without Cameron, I don’t know what the plot would be and I don’t know what it would look like. But I also love the franchise and I love [director] Kenny [Ortega], and I love Disney and I love that cast. I loved that time in my life.”

As for Carson, she said she “couldn’t imagine” doing it without Boyce.

“I couldn’t imagine doing it without him,” she also explained to People Magazine. “But I appreciate that people love the franchise so much that they would want it to continue. I love Evie, but it’s the core four forever.”

The actress added in another interview, “It’s such a big universe, this could go on forever — there’s so many descendants. As far as the original descendants, I don’t know if there’s more. For us, it’s hard to imagine doing anything without Cameron. That’s where our heart lies, but it’s open to so much imagination. I can’t even think about it, the thought is too difficult.”

What Else Do They Have Planned For The Franchise?

Descendants Cast

So there may not be a fourth movie in the works, but there are some rumors that they’re going to turn it into a Broadway play! Yep, according to Playbill.com, a stage adaptation of the series is now available for licensing. It will reportedly be based off of all three of the flicks and will contain old songs — which will be adapted by Madeline Smith and orchestrated by Matthew Tishler — as well as new ones — which will be written by Nick Blaemire! This is seriously the best news ever!
