Former President Donald Trump is known for his explosive and combative behavior on social media.

But in recent days, followers have been asking themselves: is this guy OK?

Trump’s biggest rival for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, announced his official campaign this week, and went over like a lead balloon with the former POTUS.

Trump took to social media to blast DeSantis. For the past few months, he’s been tearing into the southern governor, calling his ability to govern into question, sneering at his COVID death record and his personal battle with Disney, and pointing to his poll numbers as proof that DeSantis can’t win in a general election.

But this week kicked everything into high gear as Trump watched someone take the ultimate “disloyal” step of planning to run against him.

Trump posted a series of videos critical of DeSantis on Instagram that were poorly received by followers, who accused him of “Friendly fire.”

Many suggested that he was out of line mocking DeSantis, and begged him to focus his ire on President Joe Biden rather than another Republican.

Trump, of course, does what Trump wants to do though – no matter what others might wish of him.

But it was on post on Truth Social had people the most confused, and worrying about his mental health.

On Wednesday as DeSantis was announcing his candidacy, Trump took to Truth Social to post, “‘Rob,’ My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!), yours does not! (per my conversation with Kim Jung Un, of North Korea, soon to become my friend!).”

One person called the post, “Bonkers.”

Another person said of the bizarre post, “DeSantis has been talking about detailed and substantive policy issues for the last hour. This is what you get from Trump. If people want idiocracy and entertainment, Trump might be the better option. If you want substance on the right, DeSantis is it.”

Another person said what they felt people were too scared to say out loud, writing, “Nobody thinks this is sane; they’re just afraid to admit it.”

These comments align with the ones that other people made on Trump’s anti-DeSantis Instagram videos, and may mark a turning point in the Presidential election even before primary season has arrived.

As legal and civil woes mount on Trump’s shoulders, Republican rivals see blood in the water and they’re looking to exploit his weakness.

But DeSantis isn’t without baggage of his own. As a member of the party that’s supposed to represent business autonomy, DeSantis is waging a highly personal and petty war against mega-corporation Disney over their criticism of his culture war topics.

Mega-donors have distanced themselves from DeSantis’ increasingly extremist policies and views, seeing him as an unwinnable horse to back in the race to the general election.

While Republicans seem to have no lack of choice for 2024, there seem to be no good choices so far.

Looking at the frontrunners, it’s currently down to either more of the chaos and childishness of the 2020 election – or more culture war issues that can’t possibly win in a general election.

Perhaps more reasonable candidates will apply to run before next year.
