Donald Trump has long touted his special and friendly relationship to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But at a time when Putin is considered an international pariah for his bloody invasion of neighboring Ukraine, Trump still has no problem singing Putin’s praises.

Even so, it was shocking to even Trump stalwarts to wake up to his comments on Truth Social Monday morning, suggesting Trump trusts Putin more than he trusts United States officials.

Donald Trump Trusts Putin More than US Officials

While it’s normal to have some ennui and distrust of government entities, Trump took it too far in an early Monday Truth Social post about Putin.

Trump took to Truth to share a conspiracy website link claiming, “FBI criminal government gangsters Peter Strzok and Charles McGonigal texts unearthed, Russiagate set up exposed.”

He captioned the post, “Remember in Helsinki when a 3rd rate reporter asked me, essentially, who I trusted more, President Putin of Russia, or our ‘Intelligence’ lowlifes. My instinct at the time was that we had really bad people in the form of James Comey, McCabe (whose wife was being helped out by Crooked Hillary while Crooked was under investigation!), Brennan, Peter Strzok (whose wife is at the SEC) & his lover, Lisa Page. Now add McGonigal & other slime to the list. Who would you choose, Putin or these Misfits?”

While Donald Trump’s laundry list of complaints against the FBI and intelligence officials in the US is long and storied, suggesting that he can trust a foreign government over his own borders on treasonous talk – nothing new for Trump, but still shocking nonetheless.

Shortly after writing that post, Trump added, “Because of the Weaponization, Targeting, and Unprecedented Harassment, I believe that I have more lawyers working for me on this Corrupt Law Enforcement induced Bull…. than any human being in the history of our Country, including even the late great gangster, Alphonse Capone! This is all being done for POLITICAL REASONS in that I am leading everybody, Republicans & Democrats, by big numbers in the Polls. The Disinformation Specialists are at it again, full time. The Fake News is their TOOL!”

But Trump’s stance here is a complete reversal from just a few years ago.

Donald Trump, the Enemy of Blue Lives

Just a few years ago, after all, Trump was firmly in the “Blue Lives Matter” camp.

Trump often touted the bravery and dedication of law enforcement in the US, and often talked about wielding law enforcement for his own purposes.

But the tide has turned, and now Trump isn’t just blasting the FBI – he goes further by calling all of the law enforcement community “corrupt.”

The strategy is interesting.

After all, Trump can’t afford to alienate any supporters right now considering how quickly he’s bleeding enthusiasm among even his most ardent supporters.

Supporting a foreign dictator who is fairly universally loathed in the US and blasting his once-secure voter bloc – what’s the end game?

It’s hard to imagine what Trump is planning right now, but he’s spending a lot of time on Truth trying to convince people that he’s still at the top of the Republican party.

In response to Trump’s command, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy signaled last week that he would not be including cuts to Medicare or social security during negotiations over the US debt ceiling.

It’s a good sign for Donald Trump – that he still wields influence in Congress despite his disastrous attempt to leverage Representatives in early January for the Speaker vote – but also a worrying one.

If Trump is legislating through McCarthy to try to regain some pull in Washington, and he’s showing a pro-Russia stance, what becomes of military budgets and Ukraine aid packages remains to be seen.

It’s a very uncertain time in the Republican party, with Trump jockeying to get back on top and up-and-comers like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis looking more and more likely as 2024 frontrunners, and the country hangs in the balance.

Trump took to the campaign trail over the weekend for weird and rambling kickoff rallies in New Hampshire and South Carolina, and if nothing else it was at least a signal that the 2024 Presidential campaign season is going to be a long one.
