Donald Trump’s legal woes are mounting by the moment.

When it was revealed that President Joe Biden had also improperly stored classified documents, the Trump team hoped for a windfall.

After all, they can’t prosecute Trump without also taking down Biden – if all things are equal.

Unfortunately for the Trump team, the situations couldn’t be more different, so Trump remains squarely in the crosshairs of the Department of Justice over his mishandling of classified documents.

The former POTUS took to Truth Social this morning to try throwing an insane and desperate new defense at the wall and hope it sticks.

Donald Trump Tries New Defense Over Documents Fiasco

When attempts to compare the Biden and Trump document scandals fell flat – after all, Biden’s team has been compliant and transparent, in stark comparison to Trump’s team who lied and obfuscated – Trump moved on to another defense.

On Truth Social this morning, Trump wrote, “Page 1: The Fake News Media & Crooked Democrats (That’s been proven!) keep saying I had a ‘large number of documents’ in order to make the Biden Classified Docs look less significant. When I was in the Oval Office, or elsewhere, & ‘papers’ were distributed to groups of people & me, they would often be in a striped paper folder with ‘Classified’ or ‘Confidential’ or another word on them. When the session was over, they would collect the paper(s), but not the folders, & I saved hundreds of them…”

He then added, “Page 2: Remember, these were just ordinary, inexpensive folders with various words printed on them, but they were a ‘cool’ keepsake. Perhaps the Gestapo took some of these empty folders when they Raided Mar-a-Lago, & counted them as a document, which they are not. It’s also possible that the Trump Hating Marxist Thugs in charge will “plant” documents while they’re in possession of the material. As President, and based on the Presidential Records Act & Socks Case, I did NOTHING WRONG. JOE DID!”

It would appear that Trump wants people to believe he only collected “ordinary, inexpensive” and “empty” folders with the “classified” moniker written on it.

And that the FBI and DOJ will plant documents in the empty folders to implicate him.

Donald Trump Grasps at Straws

It’s the first time he’s attempted to front this defense – and it seems both desperate and random.

The theory seems to be that if Trump can convince a judge that he’s being framed – and that he only took empty folders – he did nothing wrong.

But 11th-hour Hail Mary defenses don’t always work, and it runs the risk of making Trump appear desperate.

Additionally, this week Trump warned that he has “info” on everyone, referencing the documents he claims now were just empty folders.

But empty folders don’t contain “info” so it’s unclear how Trump will reconcile those two defenses.

Trump also issued an ominous warning this week to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, to try to wave him off a 2024 campaign.

Business Insider writes, “On Monday, former President Donald Trump phoned into the conservative podcast ‘The Water Cooler’ and issued a warning to his prospective presidential rival Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida.

‘So now I hear he might want to run against me. So we’ll handle that the way I handle things,’ Trump said.

Trump also claimed credit — as he has repeatedly done in the past — for DeSantis clinching the governorship in 2018, saying, ‘I got him elected, pure and simple.’”

The Trump team is embroiled in fending off legal challenges from every side and may soon find themselves defending against criminal charges, if the Fulton County District Attorney files indictments against Trump like many experts predict.

It’s a rough start to 2023 for Trump, who expected to kick off the year with a strong campaign for his 2024 candidacy.
