Donald Trump is hard on the campaign trail for 2024.

This week, he’s focused on rallying his supporter troops and defending his campaigning style from accusations that he’s been lukewarm out of the gate.

But after a devastating loss in court for Trump accompanied by a stinging rebuke from a judge, Trump is lashing out over the person who leaked the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe V Wade, which Trump blames for Republicans’ loss in the midterm elections.

And his lashing out came with a terrifying suggestion for a constitutional violation.

Donald Trump Doesn’t Value Freedom of the Press

If one thing can be said about Donald Trump, it’s that he’s no friend of the press.

For years, Trump has lashed out at who he calls the “fake news media,” blasting them for unfavorable coverage of his actions.

When Trump breaks the law – or is alleged to – he takes offense at coverage of it when he can’t seem to get news outlets to cover what he sees as the “good things” he does.

But this week’s comments from Trump aimed at journalism marks a stark and terrifying escalation into his war against the press, and a glimpse as to what voters can expect under a Trump Presidency chapter two.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced that they were unable to discover who leaked the report that they were planning to overturn Roe v Wade last year.

The leaked document caused an uproar, protests, and demands for accountability.

Even among conservatives, support for abortion access remains relatively high, and Trump and his team blame the leaked documents for why Republicans failed to manifest a red wave in the midterm elections.

As a result of the leaked documents, Trump says, Democrats were able to place abortion on the ballot and the country repudiated Republicans for taking away a right for the first time in US history.

Of course, the Supreme Court went on to overturn Roe v Wade anyway so it’s unlikely that the leaked document did anything other than give people a heads up – but the strategy offers the chance to blame someone for the Republicans’ loss in the midterms.

Trump took to Truth Social to respond to the news about the still-elusive leaker, writing, “The Supreme Court has just announced it is not able to find out, even with the help of our ‘crack’ FBI, who the leaker was on the R v Wade scandal. They’ll never find out, & it’s important that they do. So, go to the reporter & ask him/her who it was. If not given the answer, put whoever in jail until the answer is given. You might add the publisher and editor to the list. Stop playing games, this leaking cannot be allowed to happen. It won’t take long before the name of this slime is revealed!”

If suggesting that a reporter be jailed for reporting the truth is shocking, it was doubly so when Trump doubled down in another post, writing, “Arrest the reporter, publisher, editor – you’ll get your answer fast. Stop playing games and wasting time!”

Trump’s campaign against the press has ramped up, and if his comments on Truth this week are any sign to go by, his next Presidency – should he be elected – could be a terrifying one for the truth and news.

Donald Trump Loses to Hillary Clinton

Trump’s comments about the press may have been a roundabout way to lash out over another event that occurred yesterday.

The BBC reports, “A US judge has ordered Donald Trump and one of his lawyers to jointly pay nearly $1m (£809,190) in fines for a ‘frivolous’ lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and others.

The lawsuit accused Mrs Clinton and others of trying to rig the 2016 US presidential election by linking his campaign to Russia.

‘This case should never have been brought,’ wrote US District Judge Donald M Middlebrooks in his order.”

The lawsuit, filed in March of 2022, accused Clinton and the Democratic National Convention of “weaving a false narrative” during the 2016 election that Trump was colluding with Russia.

The judge didn’t hold back, blasting Trump for the lawsuit.

Middlebrooks wrote in his ruling that Trump is a “mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process”, and added that the lawsuit showed “inadequacy as a legal claim” and that it was intended for a “political purpose”.

“No reasonable lawyer would have filed it,” he added.

“Mr Trump is a prolific and sophisticated litigant who is repeatedly using the courts to seek revenge on political adversaries,” the ruling reads in part.

Trump was seeking $70 million in damages but now will have to pony up $1M for the various defendants – including over $170K for Clinton herself.

With that context, it’s a little clearer as to why Trump was in such a fighting mood yesterday.

Nonetheless, attacks on the press can’t be normalized and threats to jail reporters who provide the truth to people should always be treated with alarm and gravity.
