The search of Mar-a-Lago by FBI agents this week has taken a stunning turn.

The Department of Justice under the direction of Attorney General Merrick Garland has unsealed the search warrant used, and what it has revealed has critics and allies of Donald Trump alike buzzing with speculation.

Donald Trump Under Investigation for Violation of Espionage Act and Obstruction of Justice

Hot off the revelation that one of Trump's own children may have tipped off the FBI about classified documents being stored in a safe in Mar-a-Lago, the Trump camp is reeling again now with information shared from an unsealed warrant.

Ever since the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago Monday looking for unspecified documents, people have been talking about what crimes they could be investigating and what the documents may contain.

We now know that the documents contained at least information on nuclear weapons – whether those of the United States or other countries remains unclear. And there's more.

CNN reports, "That document reveals that FBI agents removed more than 20 boxes from former President Donald Trump’s resort and residence in Palm Beach, Florida, as well as binders of photos, sets of classified government materials and at least one handwritten note.

Federal agents seized just one set of 'top secret/SCI' documents, according to the search warrant receipt. Agents took four sets of 'top secret' documents, three sets of 'secret' documents, and three sets of “confidential” documents.

The warrant receipt didn’t detail what these classified documents were about.

Among the items is a document about pardoning Roger Stone, a staunch Trump ally who was convicted in 2019 of lying to Congress during its probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. The Stone-related material taken from Mar-a-Lago was listed in the warrant receipt as 'Executive Grant of Clemency re: Roger Jason Stone, Jr.'"

While what's contained in the documents is worrying enough, what has Trump allies spooked is the revelation that the Department of Justice is investigating Trump for possibly violating the Espionage Act and/or Obstruction of Justice. These are not small charges, and it's likely only Trump's inner circle and legal team knew they were on the table.

Conviction of either could result in imprisonment and/or fines.

Will Donald Trump Face Charges?

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social today to discuss the then-upcoming unsealing of the warrant, writing, "…They could have had it anytime they wanted—and that includes LONG ago. ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS ASK. The bigger problem is, what are they going to do with the 33 million pages of documents, many of which are classified, that President Obama took to Chicago?"

Unfortunately, the information from the warrant may scare away Trump allies who have been struggling to drum up enthusiasm for a 2024 run considering the number of controversies swirling the Republican maverick.

Whether or not Trump will face consequences is anyone's guess at this point. The business mogul is not called, "Teflon Don" for nothing – and fines alone are a possible consequence even if he's convicted.

But this is the closest the Department of Justice has come to levying severe criminal indictments against the former President, and it's shaking up Washington as they reassess and figure out what this means for the midterms and 2024.
