Former President Donald Trump is again calling for an elected official to be thrown in jail. This time, he set his sights on New York Representative Jamaal Bowman. The business mogul raged on Truth Social over the weekend about a fire alarm incident that Bowman was involved in.

And apparently, Trump thinks that what Bowman did was worse than the riots on January 6 at the US Capitol. The former President raged that Bowman should be jailed, even as he seems to concede that the January 6 riots were criminal.

Bowman Activated A Fire Alarm And He Could Face Big Trouble

On Saturday, the House of Representatives in Washington was scrambling to come up with a stopgap measure to keep the government funded and open for another 45 days. Failing to pass some sort of 11th-hour deal would have been devastating for Congressional Republicans. With the GOP retaining a slim majority in the house, they likely would have faced the lion’s share of the blame if the government had ground to a halt on Sunday. Especially without some sort of temporary measures put in place. And, knowing that, Speaker Kevin McCarthy watered down a stopgap measure bill to the point that they were able to secure the approval of nearly every Congressional Democrat in the House to pass the temporary budget bill. 1 Democrat voted “no” while 90 Republicans voted against their own party’s bill.

As a result, the government is funded for an additional 45 days. This gives McCarthy time to get his party in line. But it wasn’t the successful Hail Mary that people were discussing as Saturday came to a close: it was a fire alarm. A Democratic Representative from New York named Jamaal Bowman pulled a fire alarm in the Cannon office building, which connects to the House chambers by an underground tunnel. The alarm was pulled as the vote over the stopgap bill got underway on Saturday. Bowman has since claimed that he was simply rushing to get to the vote. He claims he accidentally triggered an alarm via a door wired to the system. However, a video appears to show Bowman reaching for something on the wall. This could suggest that he activated the alarm intentionally.

Democrats were seemingly trying to stall the start of the vote in the chambers. They were working out whether or not the party would get in line behind the bill. Now, some officials are comparing Bowman’s actions to the riots on January 6. Speaker Kevin McCarthy claims that Bowman’s actions mirror those of the January 6 rioters. He told the media that we’ve seen “how other people were treated when they come in and wanted to change the course of what was happening in the building.” He called the incident an “embarrassment” and promised to speak to Democratic leadership.

Donald Trump then took what McCarthy said, and ran with it. On Truth Social, the former President wrote, “Will Congressman Jamal Bowman be prosecuted and imprisoned for very dangerously pulling and setting off the main fire alarm system in order to stop a Congressional vote that was going on in D.C. His egregious act is covered on tape, a horrible display of nerve and criminality.” The business mogul then snarled, “It was a very dangerous ‘Obstruction of an Official Proceeding,’ the same as used against our J-6 prisoners. Actually, his act may have been worse. HE MUST SUFFER THEIR SAME FATE. WHEN WILL HIS TRIAL BEGIN???”

Trump Seems To Admit J6 Riot Was Criminal Act

In the same breath that Trump calls for Bowman’s jailing, he seems to admit that the January 6 rioters engaged in criminal behavior. This deviates from previous statements from the business titan. In the past, Trump has refused to acknowledge the rioters as anything but peaceful and law-abiding. Of course, history paints a far different picture. But Donald Trump‘s admittance over the weekend suggests that he too believes the rioters went too far. And he thinks Bowman’s fire alarm incident is comparable.

Currently, it’s unclear what Bowman’s fate will be. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said over the weekend that until he saw the video, he had “no comment.”
