Former President Donald Trump is neck-deep in legal peril, but he’s still hot on the trail of the GOP presidential nomination for 2024.
And the Republican field has opened wide in recent days, with former Vice President Mike Pence, Senator Tim Scott, fmr Governor Nikki Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – and now fmr Governor Chris Christie throwing their hats into the ring.
But DeSantis and Christie have borne the brunt of Trump’s ire in recent weeks.

Trump has been methodically attacking DeSantis for months, long before he even officially entered the race – pointing to poll numbers between the two rivals, and suggesting that DeSantis is too extreme and unelectable.
But in the past week, Trump has turned his angry eyes on Christie, and his punches have been targeted.
Christie has long faced criticism in the public sphere for being visibly overweight, compared to other politicians who maintain the “public image” expected in classic politics.
And Trump, in true Trump style, has gotten down and dirty with his insults.
It started with a comment on Truth Social in the wake of Christie’s formal announcement that he would be running for the GOP nomination.
Trump wrote, “How many times did Chris Christie use the word SMALL? Does he have a psychological problem with SIZE? Actually, his speech was SMALL, and not very good. It rambled all over the place, and nobody had a clue of what he was talking about. Hard to watch, boring, but that’s what you get from a failed Governor (New Jersey) who left office with a 7% approval rating and then got run out of New Hampshire. This time, it won’t be any different!”
And it was joined by a doctored video which showed Christie giving his announcement speech, but someone has edited food into the video.

Trump has long taken pot-shots at Christie over his weight, in a twist of irony.
Because Trump himself is no slim chicken – despite his boast that he’s a specimen of perfect health.
And Christie, with a long-suffering eyeroll, has already responded to the frontrunner’s attacks.
Fox News reports, “Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie laid into former President Donald Trump Wednesday, calling him ‘juvenile’ and a ‘baby’ after the latter targeted him with fat jokes.
‘Look, he’s a juvenile. He’s a baby. Only children talk like that. He never said that about me when he offered me White House Chief of Staff,’ Christie told Fox News’ Bret Baier during an appearance on ‘Special Report.’
‘He never said that about me when he offered me Secretary of Homeland Security, twice. Never said that about me when he offered me Secretary of Labor. I wasn’t any of those things then,’ he said.
‘Look, the minute you speak out against him, Bret, you know what he does? He lashes back out like a child. And if you or I were raising that child, we’d send them to their room, not to the White House,’ he added.”
When he takes the campaign trail this weekend ahead of his Tuesday arraignment, it’s expected that Trump will take shots at both DeSantis and Christie, focused on their threat to his frontrunner status.
There is one thing that Christie lacks that Trump has, however – 37 federal indictments for violating the Espionage Act and obstructing justice.
