Rock legend Sir Elton John and current superstar Dua Lipa have teamed up for a new version of an old favorite. “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” is the result of their collaborative effort, and it’s out of this world. Australian trio Pnau has remixed the song and you can listen to it now. CELEB takes a closer look at the collaboration and the beautiful song it produced.
The song is a stunning revisit of some of John’s best hits in the most wonderful way possible. Both the rock legend and Lipa sing some of John’s favorites, including the original “Cold Heart” and “Rocket Man,” and it’s blended together like musical butter, smooth and silky.
It’s set against the backdrop of a music video that is both weird and wonderful; with mouse-like claymation creatures and stylized cartoon versions of both Lipa and John exploring the cosmos and dancing in ’70’s platform shoes. Yes, really.
John’s croon melts gorgeously with Lipa’s clear and rich vocals, with a pulsing dance beat tying it altogether. The video is delightful, created by Hamburg based animator and director Raman Djafari. In the video, the characters step onto their own planets as they drift apart suddenly, and the press team describes it as, “a beautifully drawn, wistful and, at times, trippy parallel to the last year and a half in lockdown.” With that in mind watching the video, it’s breathtaking and hopeful all at once.
Elton and Dua
It’s a unique duo, but they’re kind of vocally made for each other. A press release for the collab tells the story of how it all came together; “The seed of the collaboration was planted after Dua invited Elton for an Instagram live discussing his experiences with Studio 54 ahead of her remix album ‘Club Future Nostalgia.’ A shared respect and subsequent friendship blossomed which saw Elton appear as a guest on Dua’s record breaking Studio 2054 live stream. Dua subsequently performed at The Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, which raised over $3 million for the Foundation. Driven by the restrictions of lockdown and a renewed passion for collaboration, Elton reached out to Dua to work on new music together remotely.”
And what they produced is nothing short of exciting; hopefully, this effort inspires them to work together again in the future. And if you listen to what the artists have to say about working together, it just might be so. Per the press release, “Elton John says: ‘The last 18 months have been hard, but being off the road has meant that I’ve actually had time to get back to my roots as a session player and collaborate with some wonderful artists. And having the opportunity to spend time with Dua, albeit remotely has been incredible. She’s given me so much energy. She’s a truly wonderful artist, and person, absolutely bursting with creativity and ideas. The energy she brought to ‘Cold Heart’ just blew my mind.’
Dua Lipa says: ‘Ever since we first ‘met’ online, we totally clicked. Elton is such an inspirational artist and also has the naughtiest sense of humour – a perfect combination. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to collaborate on this track with him. It’s so very special, with some of my very favourite Elton John classic songs combined – I loved being part of such a creative and joyous experience. Can’t wait to hear it everywhere this summer.’”
While that isn’t exactly a promise of future team-ups, it brings us hope.
Pnau Remixes Cold Heart
But you can’t talk about how well John and Lipa blend together without talking about the group that pulled it all into the year 2021: Pnau. The talented Australian trio took the vocals and familiar sounds of John’s popular older songs, and gave it a chill, updated vibe perfect for any modern dance floor. Per the press release: “PNAU say: ‘Setting a stage for the two greatest performers in the world today Sir Elton John and Dua Lipa, we knew we had to go in deep, take them into our world, the psychedelic lazer black lit club. Where all of us can meet on the dance floor, forget the outside and lose ourselves in the healing waters of music and love eternal.'”
With the turmoil of 2020 and the resurgence of everything uncertain again in 2021, it’s really nice to have something as familiar as Elton John on the radio again. Add Dua Lipa’s unbeatable talents and the zen vibes of Pnau’s beat, and you’ve got a Summer superhit.
Give “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” a watch on YouTube. You won’t regret watching the video; it’s a ’80’s-meets-2021 cosmic journey.
