What Is ‘Mayday’ About?
Mayday is about a young woman named Ana, who was transported to a mysterious world where women lure men to their deaths at sea via radio transmissions. After years of being exploited by men, they have decided to seek revenge and break the cycle. But when she realized that she wasn’t the killer they wanted her to be, it made things a little complicated. Besides Van Patten, it also starred Mia Goth, Juliette Lewis, Havana Rose Liu, Soko, Théodore Pellerin and more.
”Ana in the beginning is hanging by a thread. She is as broken as you can be,” the actress told Daily News about her character. “Like everyone, we can get drawn into things, we can be tempted, and she fell into that for a hot secon. And she fell into this world and this power of being in control … She needed to feel that in order to understand her own strength and what that meant to her.”
The star explained that as soon as she “read the script [she] was so transported to this world that [she] had never seen before or read before.” And it wasn’t just the “bottomless pit of metaphors and meanings” that drew her in, however.
“The idea of working with all women was so exciting to me. I had never done that, it’s rare. Who knows when I’ll be able to do it again?” she added. “Ultimately, I think it’s a story of a young woman finding her inner strength and power. But I think in order for her to do so, she had to confront these [sides] of herself that she was afraid to look into before. I hope that young women especially see this movie and mostly after this year, when everyone had hit their low points, I think it shows that you can get through [anything].”

Wondering where you recognize Van Patten from? Well, it’s most likely from her role as Zoe Marconi in the show Nine Perfect Strangers. Back in August 2021, news hit the web that Van Patten was going to star in a brand new drama series called Tell Me Lies, and everyone seriously freaked out over the news. The upcoming Hulu show, which is being produced by the one and only Emma Roberts, is going to be based off of a novel written by Carola Lovering. According to Deadline, it will follow “a tumultuous but intoxicating relationship as it unfolds over the course of eight years.”
“When Lucy Albright (Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco meet at college, they are at that formative age when seemingly mundane choices lead the way to irrevocable consequences. Although their relationship begins like any typical campus romance, they quickly fall into an addictive entanglement that will permanently alter not only their lives, but the lives of everyone around them,” a synopsis reads. “Lucy, on the surface, is a sheltered but well-adjusted girl from an affluent Long Island town. Her acerbic humor and often cool demeanor has earned her the label of ‘Ice Queen’ among her friends. But beneath her confident façade Lucy is hiding a childhood trauma that has left her feeling disconnected from her peers. When she meets Stephen, Lucy sees a dark streak in him that she recognizes in herself, and will inadvertently bring her demons to light.”
Sounds intense! And Van Patten couldn’t be more excited about the role. She said, “Honestly, this next show is one of my dream roles. It reminds me of all of my favorite movies and all of my favorite characters and it’s called Tell Me Lies. It’s also based off of a book, which I highly recommend, you will read it in like two days. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be dark, sexy, and compelling. I’m excited to kind of experience all of that within one character.”

She’s dating the one and only Nat Wolff (who fans may recognize from The Naked Brothers Band, The Fault In Our Stars, Paper Towns and more), and they could not be cuter together.
