As fans know, Styles and Swift have had a long and rocky history together. In case you forgot, we went ahead and made you a complete guide to their relationship. Here’s everything that went down between them…

Harry Styles And Taylor Swift First Met In March 2012

So let’s go back all the way to March 2012, when the two stars met for the first time at the Kids Choice Awards. At the time, it was reported that they had hung out back stage, and that sparks instantly flew. And get this — the star was even spotted dancing in the audience when One Direction hit the stage to perform their hit song “What Makes You Beautiful.”

Then, one month later, Justin Bieber told Daily Mirror, “One of the biggest artists in the world thinks [Styles] is so hot, but I have been sworn to secrecy,” and many people thought he was referring to Swift.

“Taylor is a huge One Direction fan and was excitedly bopping along to the boys when they performed onstage. Then she was chatting to Justin and told him how hot she found Harry,” a source told Daily Mail at the time. “Taylor went backstage and was hanging around by the group’s dressing room and said a quick ‘hello’ to the guys. She started dramatically fanning herself afterwards making out like she was overwhelmed which got everyone laughing. She really likes Harry but made Justin promise not to go on the record about it.”

And it seemed like Styles felt the same way! How do we know? Well, during an interview with MTV one week later, the other members of 1D kept teasing him about his crush on Swift.

But Things Fizzled Out After That

Harry Styles Watermelon Sugar

There were even rumors that Swift jetted off to New York City to be with Styles while he and his bandmates performed on Saturday Night Live in April 2012. Although there’s no pictures of them together, a few different people tweeted that they saw them hanging out around the city. Plus, a friend of the singer’s allegedly told Vanity Fair that they “got really close, and he was all, like, ‘You’re amazing — I want to be with you. I want to do this.’” But unfortunately, when he had to head off to Australia for his tour, things fizzled out between them — for now.

And when Styles was spotted kissing a model named Emma Ostilly a few weeks later, that was reportedly the final straw for Swift. According to Vanity Fair, “Styles texted Swift to alert her to a picture of himself on the Internet ‘kissing a friend good-bye,’ but said, ‘It’s no big deal.’ When Swift searched online for the picture, however, she found that they were ‘making out like with their hands all up in each other’s hair.’”

Harry Styles Wanted Taylor Swift Back

But things didn’t end there. The outlet reported that Styles “pursued [Swift] for the better part of a year, professing his devotion and promising never to stray again.” And in September 2012, they were spotted hanging out once again. Yep, a fan snapped separate pics with both of the stars at LA’s Katsuya restaurant from the same night, and the internet quickly went into a frenzy.

And one month later, when asked who his celebrity crush was, the “Sign of the Times” crooner admitted it was the pop star. He told Seventeen Magazine, “[Swift’s]’s a really lovely girl. Honestly, she couldn’t be a sweeter person. She’s a great girl and she’s extremely talented. She’s one of those people you meet [who’s] genuinely a nice person. Some people you meet and they are not as nice as you make them out to be, but she’s one of those people who’s really just amazing.”

Cue The Paper Airplanes

#Haylor fans went wild in November 2012, when Swift was caught wearing a paper airplane necklace during a radio appearance. Why? Well, it was the same exact piece of jewelry that Styles was seen wearing a few weeks before. Yep, the two had matching necklaces, which was practically the confirmation we had all been waiting for.

Plus, a radio host reported that they saw the two stars walking “hand-in-hand” during rehearsals for Swift’s The X Factor performance days later.

“Taylor Swift was the special guest performer, and a little inside scoop for you: During rehearsals, Harry from One Direction came and slapped me on the back and said, ‘Hey, Mario, how ya doing?’ And I said, ‘What are you doing here?’ And he sort of [pointed] toward Taylor,” he dished.

Next Up, Came Their Iconic Central Park Date

Then, the moment we were all waiting for — Swift and Styles were photographed holding hands while walking in Central Park on December 2, 2012. Over the next week or so, they were practically inseparable, and were caught packing on the PDA all over the city! They even jetted off to London together, and headed to LA after that — so yeah, it was clear they were spending a lot of time together.

On December 21, 2012, the lovebirds were spotted on a ski trip in Utah, which is where the infamous ski accident went down. For those who missed it, the 1D heartthrob reportedly crashed a snow mobile, flew off the front and cut his chin open, which Swift later sang about in her song “Out of the Woods.”

They rang in the New Year together in New York City, and get this — right when the clock struck midnight they shared a big ol’ smooch, which was luckily caught on camera by fans.

Then Came The Breakup

Although they seemed as happy as could be together, reports started to emerge that they had split in January 2013. Styles and Swift headed to the British Virgin Islands together, but reportedly got into a major fight during the trip.

“They were on holiday and had an almighty row. They are two young stars at the top of their game so who knows what will happen in the future,” a source told MailOnline.

The blonde beauty was even photographed leaving the trip early, so it looked like some thing had definitely gone wrong between them.

Then, in February 2013, while performing at the Grammy Awards, Swift seemed to throw some subtle shade towards Styles, who was there in the audience. While performing her song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” she used a British accent to deliver one of the lines.

When asked how he was handling the split during an interview days later, Styles said, “I’m OK, thank you for asking. Yeah, I’m good.” And he even called her Grammy performance “good.”

“She’s a great performer. She always performs great and she’s always good on the stage,” he added. “She’s done it for a long time. She knows what she’s doing onstage. It was just another good Taylor Swift performance. It was good.”

The Shade Didn’t End There

And that wasn’t the only time Swift threw some shade towards her ex. Yep, during the MTV Video Music Awards in May 2013, she was caught saying “Shut the f**k up” to Selena Gomez while Styles was accepting an award. Yikes! They did snap a picture together at an after party later that night, however, so it looks like they were able to put some of their drama behind them.

Taylor Swift Wrote Tons Of Songs About Harry Styles

When Swift’s album 1989 came out in October 2014, it contained a lot of songs about Styles, including “Out of the Woods,” “Style,” “All You Had to do Was Stay,” “I Know Place” and more.

“We were built to fall apart / Then fall back together (back together) / Ooh, your necklace hanging from my neck / The night we couldn’t quite forget / When we decided, we decided / To move the furniture so we could dance / Baby, like we stood a chance / Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying,” the lyrics to “Out of the Woods” read. “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? / Twenty stitches in a hospital room / When you started crying, baby, I did too / But when the sun came up, I was looking at you / Remember when we couldn’t take the heat? / I walked out, I said, ‘I’m setting you free’ / But the monsters turned out to be just trees / When the sun came up you were looking at me.”

In a later interview, the musician said he didn’t mind that she wrote songs about him.

“I think about what it means to me to write a song about somebody else, and for someone else to do that, I think it’s flattering,” he said. “Even if the song isn’t that flattering, you still spend time on it, and ultimately, using Taylor as an example, she’s a great songwriter. The only time that you think, ‘Oh, is this song too personal?’ is if you think about, is this going to be really annoying for the other person.”

It’s been rumored that 1D’s song “Perfect” is about Swift, and that his song “Two Ghosts” was also inspired by her.

“But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms / And if you like having secret little rendezvous / If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn’t do / Then baby, I’m perfect / Baby, I’m perfect for you / And if you like midnight driving with the windows down / And if you like going places we can’t even pronounce / If you like to do whatever you’ve been dreaming about / Then baby, you’re perfect,” he sings in “Perfect.” “So let’s start right now / And if you like cameras flashin’ every time we go out / Oh, yeah / And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about / Baby, I’m perfect.”

Now There’s No Bad Blood Between Them

Taylor Swift Musician

In 2015, Swift reflected on their relationship, telling GQ, “The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety. Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘OK, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this? How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days?’” And so, you know, I think a lot of relationships can be very solid and that’s kind of what you hope for, for it to be solid and healthy but that’s not always what you get. And it doesn’t mean that it’s not special and extraordinary just to have a relationship that’s fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility.”

And when Styles was asked about it by Rolling Stone in 2017, he had nothing but nice things to say.

“I think, relationships are hard, at any age,” he said. “And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier. I mean, you’re a little bit awkward to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it — I just wanted it to be a normal date.”

He even spoke out about the songs she wrote about him.

“I mean, I don’t know if they’re about me or not, but the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere. I write from my experiences; everyone does that,” he added. “I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs. That’s what hits your heart. That’s the stuff that’s hardest to say, and it’s the stuff I talk least about. That’s the part that’s about the two people. I’m never going to tell anybody everything.”

The 27-year-old concluded, “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You’re celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than ‘this didn’t work out, and that’s bad.’ And if you run into that person, maybe it’s awkward, maybe you have to get drunk… but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it’s the best shit ever. So thank you.”
