The 2021 Met Gala was certainly a night to remember. The star-studded event took place on Monday, September 13, and so many famous faces showed up in gorgeous dresses and handsome suits. From Lil Nas X wearing three different looks on the red carpet (including one that looked like gold-studded armor!) to Billie Eilish rocking a Marilyn Monroe-inspired dress with a 15-foot train, the stars did not disappoint with their outfits.
But some people were quick to notice that some celebrities were missing from the biggest night in fashion, including Harry Styles (who hosted the event last year), Lady Gaga (who always slays the carpet), Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Gigi Hadid‘s boyfriend, Zayn Malik, and more. So why did they skip the Met Gala this year? Not to worry, you guys, because we went ahead and did some investigating for you. Here’s why your favorite stars didn’t attend…
It’s actually been rumored that Malik was banned from the event by the creator Anna Wintour after he dissed it in 2018!
“It’s not something I would go to,” he told GQ Magazine. “I’d rather be sitting at my house, doing something productive, than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet… To do the self-indulgent ‘Look at me, I’m amazing’ thing on the red carpet, it’s not me.”
The former One Direction member did attend the event back in 2016 with Hadid, and he later said in an interview that it felt like a joke to him.
“I did go, but I didn’t go there to be like, ‘Yo, take me serious.’ I was taking the piss!” he explained. “I went there as my favorite Mortal Kombat character, Jax.”
As for his fellow bandmate, many people were hoping that Styles would show up, since he was the host last year and he blew us all away with is look. But unfortunately, he’s currently on tour and had a show in Houston, TX, on the same night as the Met Gala. Maybe next year, Styles fans!
Lady Gaga has previously dubbed herself the “Queen of the Met Gala,” so everyone was pretty bummed when she was M.I.A. this year! It’s still unclear why she didn’t show up, but she’s been keeping a pretty low-profile lately. She also explained in November 2019 that when it comes to fashion, she doesn’t want to put as much effort into creating shocking looks anymore.
“I have to say, it was quite recently — after doing A Star Is Born, and working with Bradley Cooper, and my experience even with winning an Oscar — I sort of just went to myself, ‘You have a much greater mission on this earth than to freak the hell out of people. Your mission is to give people a form of love through your art that lifts them up,'” she said.
Unfortunately, Zendaya couldn’t attend the event this year because she was busy filming the highly-anticipated second season of her hit show Euphoria.
“I will be on [set of] Euphoria. My fans are very upset with me. I will unfortunately not be able to attend [the Met Gala], because I’ll be working for Euphoria,” she explained during a recent interview alongside her Dune costar Timothée Chalamet (who hosted the Met Gala this year). “I wish I could, especially since this fashion icon is going to be hosting.”
Kylie Jenner was spotted in New York City last week and pretty much always attends the event, so many people were convinced that she was going to be at the Met Gala. Which is why when she posted hours before that she was “so sad” she couldn’t go, everyone was pretty confused. It turns out, the reality star (who recently announced that she is pregnant with her and Travis Scott‘s second child!) decided to skip out on this year’s festivities because she was simply too tired.
“Kylie’s pregnant and it’s a lot to take on, going to such a public event,” a source told Page Six, adding that going to the Met Gala takes a lot of time, effort and energy.
Nicki Minaj didn’t make an appearance at the Met Gala because guests are required to show proof of vaccination from COVID-19.
“They want you to get vaccinated for the Met. if I get vaccinated it won’t for the Met. It’ll be once I feel I’ve done enough research,” she wrote on Twitter. “I’m working on that now. In the meantime, my loves, be safe. Wear the mask with two strings that grips your head and face. Not that loose one”
There were many rumors that Charli D’Amelio would be at the Met Gala this year, which divided the internet. Some thought the TikTok star shouldn’t be invited to the glamorous event, while others felt she deserved to attend. But it turns out, she couldn’t go because of her age!
“The funny thing about this is, I’m actually not old enough to go to the Met Gala. But I have gotten so much hate about that, and I’m like, ‘Guys! I can’t even go!'” she said during an appearance on Sirius XM. “If that was my seat, I would definitely not be upset about that at all, and I would be happy to go. But sadly, that can’t happen.”
