Honey Bye-Bye: Alana Thompson Getting Weight Loss Surgery

When most people picture Honey Boo Boo (real name Alana Thompson), they picture a sassy, apple-cheeked toddler in a tutu.

But Thompson is getting older, and as she approaches her 17th birthday, she has her future in mind. The reality star recently announced plans for her health that she hopes will help her moving forward.

Honey Boo-Boo is Getting Surgery

Thompson's manager, Gina Rodriguez, recently spoke to TMZ and explained what Thompson has in mind.

For her 17th birthday, Thompson will be hopping on a plane from her Georgia home and heading to New York City.

But it's not seeing the sights that Thompson has in mind, she's headed to the Big Apple for a surgical procedure to help her lose weight.

TMZ reports, "She's getting a suture sculpt endoscopic sleeve from weight loss doctor Steven Batash, which can set someone back about $13K. As for why Alana's going this route — we're told she's currently 275 pounds, and wants to get down to 150.

We're told she's trying her best to live a healthier life — trying diets and increasing her exercise over the past year — but hasn't gotten the results she hoped she would."

According to TMZ, Thompson believes that the extra weight she's carrying is genetic and that she won't be able to shed it on her own – and she has some compelling evidence in her own mother, Mama June.

Thompson's new guardian, her sister Pumpkin, signed off on the procedure.

Joining Thompson in getting the procedure will be her boyfriend Dralin Craswell, as they navigate the experience together.

Following in Mama’s Footsteps in Some Ways and Not Others

While Thompson is following in her mother's footsteps by getting weight loss surgery, that's where the similarities end.

Mama June (real name June Shannon) no longer has custody of Thompson and has strained to no relationships with the rest of her children.

Thompson, on the other hand, is close to her family – and happy to be in the custody of her sister, Pumpkin.

Currently, Shannon pays her daughter $800 a month in child support to care for Thompson, and says that she speaks to her every day. However, her daughters may tell a different story.

Time and time again, Shannon has struggled to make the responsible decisions for her family, leading to resentment and estrangement. Now, however, with Thompson safely in her sister's care – maybe they can start healing old rifts.
