By now, almost everyone has seen the music video for Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco‘s brand new song “Lonely.” Yep, the track, which is an emotional ballad all about the pressures of fame and the troubles Bieber has faced from stepping into the spotlight at such a young age, came out on Friday, October 16, 2020. But if you’ve watched the powerful music video a million times like us over here at CelebMagazine, then you’re probably wondering — who is the actor that starred in it?
What Is The Music Video About?
For those who haven’t seen it, the visual shows a young Bieber (played by Jacob Tremblay) dressed in his signature purple hoodie and rocking the famous Bieber hairdo. Fans can see him sitting alone in his dressing room before taking to the stage to perform for an empty arena.
“What if you had it all / But nobody to call? / Maybe then you’d know me / ‘Cause I’ve had everything / But no one’s listening / And that’s just f**kin’ lonely,” the lyrics read. “Everybody knows my past now / Like my house was always made of glass / And maybe that’s the price you pay / For the money and fame at an early age / And everybody saw me sick / And it felt like no one gave a si** / They criticized the things I did as an idiot kid.”
Who Exactly Is Jacob Tremblay?
So who exactly is the young star that played Bieber in the vid? Why does he look so familiar, you ask? Well, Tremblay is a 14-year-old actor who has previously starred in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Last Chance Casting, Power Rangers, With Love, Christmas, Wonder, Night Hunter, Spontaneous and more. And get this — it was announced last year that he is going to star as Flounder in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid alongside Halle Bailey, Awkwafina, Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hauer-King.
Jacob Tremblay Was ‘Nervous’ To Play Justin Bieber
The actor admitted during a new interview with The Loopthat he was pretty nervous about playing Bieber. He also opened up about how he got the role, and it turns out, the “Love Yourself” crooner’s team was the one to reach out to him, and then they set up a phone call between the two stars.
“I ended up getting a text message from Justin Bieber asking if I had any questions, which I did — I had a lot of questions. We kind of organized that we would call each other some time, but we didn’t really get an exact time, so he ended up calling me when I was in the grocery store… I was like, to my parents, ‘I have to go outside because Justin Bieber’s calling me,'” he explained.
So why was he so nervous? Well, he added, “I had actually never played a real person before. I’ve always played made-up characters, so I just really wanted to make sure that I had the feelings of the song and how Justin wanted me to fee. I really got to understand — it’s a bit more of a serious song but I’m really excited for people to hear it, so they can see the story. It’s really good.”
Tremblay also revealed to Entertainment Tonight Canada that he felt a lot of pressure to make Bieber proud.
“I just wanted to really make Justin proud, and do a good job to portray the feelings he wanted me to,” he said.
What Does Justin Bieber Think Of Jacob Tremblay’s Performance?
It turns out, the singer is a big fan of how the video came out!
“The first time I watched him go through the segment… I legitimately lost it,” Bieber said during an Instagram Live, when asked about Tremblay’s performance on set. “I was tearing up, like, completely.”
He also shared a snap of him and the 14-year-old to his feed, captioning it, “Jacob, thank you for being such a huge part of this story! You brought the story to life and there couldn’t be anyone cooler to do it! Thanks bro.”
In another post, the pop star added, “@jacobtremblay is so talented. It was emotional to see him play me from the outside looking in.”
What Else Has Justin Bieber Been Up To Recently?
As fans know, this isn’t the only new song Bieber dropped recently. Just last month, he released another track (which featured Chance the Rapper) called “Holy,” which was a love song to his wife, Hailey Baldwin.
“That the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me / Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy / On God / Runnin’ to the altar like a track star / Can’t wait another second / ‘Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me feels so holy,” he sang in it.
He also just dropped a brand new collaboration with crocs, posed on the cover of Vogue Italia earlier this month, has continuously been working on his clothing line Drew, posted some pictures from the studio and headed to New York City to perform “Lonely” for the first time on Saturday Night Live!
