Is Joshua Bassett OK?! That seems to be the question on everyone’s minds after the Disney actor revealed that he had been rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery last week. And now, he’s given us an important health update.
“Hi guys! I wanted to take a moment to thank you all and give you a little update,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories on Tuesday, January 19. “I am feeling much better! Getting very excellent care and definitely on the mend. Really grateful to have so much support in this time and I promise there is much good to come. Looking forward to getting back to work. Thank you all again for your kindness, love to you all.”
Why Was Joshua Bassett Hospitalized?
For those who missed it, the High School Musical: The Musical — The Series star revealed that he had been hospitalized last Thursday — on the same day that his new song, “Lie Lie Lie” came out.
“Welp… Not the first place I assumed I’d be on my ‘Lie Lie Lie’ release day… the ER!” he captioned a video of himself laying in a hospital bed and wearing a gown. “Before you ask, no it’s not COVID. After an unknown, uncomfortable feeling turned into, times 10, the worst pain of my life, I figured I’d just try to sleep. After multiple, very very ugly days and nights, I had no choice today but be taken to the hospital. I’d like to say thank you for all the support on the song! I’ve been doing what I can today to stay involved. Had my first surgery tonight! Gonna rest at the hospital and the doctors will see what they see in the morn!
Much love to all!”

Bassett added, “P.S. According to the doc, I now have the medal for ‘the sickest patient in the hospital.’ How cool!”
He unfortunately didn’t go into any further detail regarding his diagnosis, so it’s still unclear what exactly was wrong with him. But we’re so glad that he’s feeling better!
Who Even Is Joshua Bassett?

Fans may recognize Bassett from his role as Ricky in Disney Channel’s new High School Musical spinoff series. Before that, he acted in Stuck in the Middle, Grey’s Anatomy, Game Shakers and more. Plus, he has also stepped into the music industry and released some songs of his own over the years.
That’s not all. Earlier this month, the 20-year-old made headlines for his past relationship with fellow HSMTMTS star Olivia Rodrigo, after she released a song that was allegedly about him. The track was called “Driver’s License,” and after it came out on January 8, 2021, it quickly swept the nation — breaking tons of records, debuting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming one of the most popular songs ever! And in the lyrics to the emotional breakup son, the actress seemingly threw a lot of shade towards Bassett.
What Happened Between Him And Olivia Rodrigo?

As fans know, the two stars played love interests in HSMTMTS, and back when they were filming the show in 2019, fans started to notice that they were hanging out a lot when the cameras stopped rolling. They posted a bunch of cute pics together on social media, and naturally, rumors started to spread that they had taken their love off the screen into real life. They never actually spoke out about the relationship while they were dating, but fans started to speculate that they had split in the summer of 2020, when the actress posted a video of herself listening to a song that they had written together for the show and wrote, “You think you can hurt my feelings? I wrote this song.”
“And that’s on failed relationships,” she captioned it.
Just a few weeks later, Bassett was spotted hanging out with Sabrina Carpenter (they were photographed getting lunch together), so it appeared that he had moved on. They were also spotted kissing during a Black Lives Matter protest a few weeks later, and in October 2020, they even more coordinated Halloween costumes. In her new song, Rodrigo sang about a “blonde girl” who was older than her, seemingly referring to Bassett’s new relationship with Carpenter (who is four years older than her).
“I got my driver’s license last week / Just like we always talked about / ‘Cause you were so excited for me / To finally drive up to your house / But today I drove through the suburbs / Crying ’cause you weren’t around,” the lyrics read. “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about / Yeah, today I drove through the suburbs / ‘Cause how could I ever love someone else?”
She also referenced a song that the guy wrote for her, which is further proof that it’s about Bassett. For those who forgot, he wrote a few songs that were rumored to be about Rodrigo throughout their relationship, including his 2020 hit “Anyone Else.”
“And I know we weren’t perfect but I’ve never felt this way for no one / And I just can’t imagine how you could be so OK now that I’m gone / Guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me / ‘Cause you said forever now I drive alone past your street,” Rodrigo sings. “Red lights / Stop signs / I still see your face / In the white cars / Front yards / Can’t drive past the places / We used to / Go to / ‘Cause I still f**king love you, babe.”
To add fuel to the fire, during one part of the music video for “Driver’s License,” a clip of someone grabbing Rodrigo’s face quickly flashes across the screen, and many people are convinced that it’s Bassett’s hand. Oh, and did we mention that he owns a white car?!
What Has Joshua Bassett Said About ‘Driver’s License?’

Well, whether it’s about him or not, the Disney star made sure to show his support for his ex’s new song. Yep, he shared her Instagram post about it to his Stories, and added, “‘Driver’s License’ is out now! Such a great song. Congrats @Olivia.Rodrigo.”
When asked about who inspired the emotional track, Rodrigo didn’t confirm or deny that it was about Bassett. She told Billboard, “I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song. It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important. To see it do really well — to have this really painful moment in my life, and turn it into something beautiful that can maybe help people through a tough time that they’re having, like I was having a tough time — it’s just so empowering. I feel grateful that I got to do that.”
Is His New Song About Olivia Rodrigo?

Naturally, when Bassett announced that he was releasing a new song days after “Driver’s License” came out, many people thought it would be a response to her shady tune. But it turns out, that is not the case. Get this, you guys — Bassett’s new song was actually written back in November 2019 — long before his drama with Rodrigo went down.
“I wrote ‘Lie Lie Lie’ after I found out a friend had been lying about me behind my back for a long time. It always sucks to hear that someone you thought you could trust would throw you under the bus when it benefits them,” he explained on his Stories. “It happens to all of us and I think all you can do is seek out people who build you up.”
“So they told me all the things that you said / Runnin’ all over my name / And you’re acting, oh, so innocent / Like I’m the only one to blame,” the lyrics read. “You’ve been lying to yourself / Lie to everyone else / Only thinking about yourself / Darling what the hell / I know what you say about me / I hope that it makes you happy / You can’t seem to get me off your mind (Get me off your mind) / I know you’re lying through your teeth / You told them the lies that you told me / I’ve had enough of it this time (Had enough this time).”
