On September 16, family members reported Myrtle Brown and her son Sergio Brown missing. Myrtle’s body was found later that same day, near her home in Chicago.
But at the time of the gruesome discovery, Sergio remained missing. PEOPLE reports that the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating Myrtle’s death as a homicide. They are describing her cause of death as the result of “multiple injuries due to assault.” In the wake of his mother’s death, Sergio fled the country and engaged in some behavior that immediately raised red flags for investigators.
He was taken into custody today, in connection with his mother’s death.

On October 11, authorities arrested Sergio Brown. After Myrtle’s death, the former Patriots player apparently fled to Mexico. On Tuesday, authorities deported him and he was arrested near San Diego, California.
In the days following Myrtle’s death, Sergio posted a number of disturbing videos to social media. On a since-deactivated account called “intplayerwithapassport,” Sergio made a number of references to what authorities think was his realization that police were after him for his mother’s murder. In one video, the former player stated“it has to be the FBI.” The athlete then claimed that the bureau paid him an “unwarranted” visit on “Bob Marley’s death day.” He also stated that the Maywood Police Department “kidnapped” him on at least two occasions.
Sergio also said in one video that he thought Myrtle was “on vacation,” and that “it had to be the FBI or Maywood PD.” However, he did not clarify what he meant by “it.” Two days later, Sergio made another video. In this one, he sang along to a Drake song and talked about dying.
Sergio played for the Patriots for six seasons starting in 2010. And in 2016, he played for the Bills. The following year, he retired from the NFL.
