In a bid to address concerns surrounding underage vaping, Juul Labs is aiming to introduce an advanced vaping device in the United States, pending authorization from US regulators. This “next-generation” vape is designed to incorporate age verification features, leveraging technology to ensure that only legal-age users have access to their products.
To validate a user’s age, the proposed vape device is designed to sync with a mobile app, requiring customers to undertake either of two verification processes: uploading a government-issued ID and a real-time selfie, or inputting personal details and permitting a third-party database to authenticate their identity. A distinguishing Pod ID chip integrated within the Juul device also possesses the capability to identify counterfeit cartridges manufactured by other companies, a measure aimed at curbing the influx of illicit fruity flavors in the market that often entice minors.
Juul Labs’ primary objective with this innovative platform is two-fold: to encourage adult smokers to transition from traditional combustible cigarettes to safer e-cigarettes, while simultaneously curbing underage access to vaping products. The legal purchasing age for e-cigarettes in the US is 21, reinforcing the company’s commitment to ensuring responsible consumption.
Joe Murillo, Chief Regulatory Officer at Juul, expressed the company’s eagerness to collaborate with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) throughout the review process. He stated, “We look forward to engaging with FDA throughout the review process while we pursue this important harm-reduction opportunity.”
If granted approval by the FDA, Juul Labs will proceed with launching the innovative product in the US market. While the product’s name for the US market has not yet been finalized, it is already available for sale in the UK and Canada under the name “JUUL2”.
