In another of 2023’s bizarre stories, Kanye West claimed in a text to pal Elon Musk that a 2002 car accident gave the rapper “signs of autism.” The bizarre exchange happened in the wee hours of the morning, although the exact date is unclear. West then asked a friend to share the exchange on the internet. And now, here we are. With more questions than answers. Here’s what West said to Musk.

Headlines with Kanye West are rarely straightforward. The rapper and fashion mogul is known for his complex experiences and openly shared mental health struggles. But a new text sent by West to tech mogul Elon Musk has people scratching their heads.
Around 2 AM on an unknown date, West texted Musk, “When are we going to speak. You owe me nothing. You never have to speak to me again. But if we do speak. The nature of the relationship has to change.” He then added, “I’m not bi polar. I have signs of autism from my car accident.”

And West then dragged Musk into the relationship drama between himself and his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. He texted the X (Twitter) owner, “You can’t watch Kim keep my kids from me. And not say anything publicly then call yourself my friend so I can bring my audience to your struggling platform.”
West screenshot the messages and sent them to Ian Connor, a long-time friend and cohort of the rapper, who goes by “Ye” these days. West instructed, “Get this out to the public.” Connor responded, “Say less,” and noted the time: “2:22 a.m.” He posted the screenshot to his own Instagram account.
Why Did Kanye Text Elon?

It’s clear from the texts that Kanye West is still stewing over his messy and public breakup with Kardashian. And it’s clear that he’s denying his professionally-granted diagnosis of bipolar disorder. The CDC says “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain.” Car accidents or traumatic brain injuries are not considered causes of ASD. So Ye’s motives for saying that are unclear. And why he sent it all to Elon Musk at 2 AM? Even more unclear.
The accident that West is referring to in the texts was a devastating crash that occurred in 2002. While West was driving home from a recording studio around 3 AM, he dozed off behind the wheel and crashed into an oncoming vehicle. The accident occurred 21 years ago this month and is clearly on the rapper’s mind.
It was a pivotal moment in a younger Kanye‘s life. He shattered his jaw and had to have it wired shut during the healing process. That challenging period of time eventually inspired his song, “Through the Wire.”
No word yet from Elon Musk on why this all needed to be said at 2 AM.
