Kelly Preston has died, following a valiant battle against breast cancer. The wife of John Travolta passed away Sunday morning, July 12, 2020—she was 57-years old.
Travolta made the announcement via his Instagram last night to his 2.8 million followers, paying tribute to the bravery and courage of the actress and mom-of-three, and sharing she had been fighting cancer for two years.
The “Pulp Fiction” star also took the time to thank the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, in addition to Kelly’s “many friends and loved ones who have been by her side.”
Travolta went on to vow that “Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered.”
Kelly Preston Fought Cancer Battle ‘Privately’
A rep for the Travolta family told People magazine that Preston had been undergoing treatment for some time.
“Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends,” the rep said in a statement.
The last time Kelly had been seen publicly was in June 2018, when she was snapped walking the red carpet with John Travolta at the premiere of the movie, “Gotti” in which the actor portrayed notorious Mafia boss, John Gotti, and Preston played his wife Victoria.
John Travolta Triple Tragedy
It’s the third heartbreaking death that John Travolta has been forced to suffer over the years.
Preston and Travolta faced every parent’s worst nightmare back in January 2009, after their first-born son, Jett, died suddenly, under tragic and unexpected circumstances.
The Travolta family had been on vacation in the Bahamas with Jett and his younger sister, Ella Bleu, when the 16-year-old suffered a seizure after hitting his head on the side of a bathtub. The unconscious teenager was discovered by a maid, but by then, sadly, it was too late the save the boy’s life and he passed away a short time later.
Jett was on the autistic spectrum and had suffered from seizures from the age of two. He had also been diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at 15-months old, which according to the Mayo Clinic, “causes swelling (inflammation) in the walls of medium-sized arteries throughout the body. It primarily affects children. The inflammation tends to affect the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.”
Both Kelly Preston and John Travolta were understandably devastated by the death of their son, who they described as, “the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for”.
“We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time that we had with him for the rest of our lives,” the couple said in a statement that was released shortly after Jett’s passing.
“Everybody grieves in their own way. I felt at times like I was drowning. It felt like a sea of wet blankets,” Kelly later admitted in an interview.
In addition to having to grieve the deaths of his wife and his son, Travolta has been dealt another devastating blow before—his girlfriend prior to meeting Preston, Diana Hyland, also died from breast cancer, just like Kelly, back in 1977.
Travolta Family Joy after Tragedy
John Travolta and Kelly Preston were able to experience joy once again following the unexpected birth of their third child, two years after Jett’s tragic death.
Preston was 48-years old when she gave birth to the couple’s second son Benjamin Hunter Kaleo, a feat which, the actress admitted, “floored” her.
“It’s pretty amazing having a child at this age,” Preston told Health magazine. “I’m just in a good place and am able to really be with my kids
“I didn’t have any doubts [about having a baby at 48. I love being pregnant. I love the closeness I feel when I’m carrying them.”
“We had been trying for quite a few years, and then of course there was a time when we weren’t, and then we started trying again,” Kelly continued.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I was floored. I’d snuck out of bed and then came back and woke Johnny up in bed. We both started crying. It was wonderful.
“I absolutely adore my kids. Johnny and I love them up constantly. Ella’s like, ‘Mom, ugh! Thank God you had Ben because now he can take some of the kisses.’”
It’s little wonder that the Travolta family statement also said, “[Kelly Preston] was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply about others and who brought life to everything she touched.”
Kelly Preston and John Travolta Love Story
Kelly Preston and John Travolta first met at a screen test for their 1989 comedy, “The Experts”, and according to Travolta it was “Love at first sight”.
However, Preston was still married to her first husband, Kevin Gage, at the time, so when pressed by Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live”, as to whether the feelings were reciprocal, the actress diplomatically answered, “Kinda!”
“Well, I was not that happily married, let’s put it that way,” Kelly explained. “I was really with the wrong person.”

It didn’t take long for Preston to fall madly in love with Travolta though, and the two ended up having one of the most enduring and loving marriages in Hollywood, after tying the knot in 1991.
