Fans of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have long speculated that the couple was ready to call it quits. The pair has been living separate lives for months amidst public turmoil caused by West’s behavior. However, they’re making it official now as reports say Kardashian has filed for divorce, and she is asking for joint custody of the couple’s four children.
Kim Files for Divorce
News broke late Friday that Kardashian has officially filed for divorce. Us Weekly reports, “The 40-year-old reality star filed for divorce on Friday, February 19. According to TMZ, she is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their four kids. The news comes one month after Us confirmed Kardashian and West, 43, were in settlement talks after she had divorce lawyer Laura Wasser on ‘retainer’ since the summer of 2020.
‘[Kim] will continue to focus on her business empire,’ a insider told Us in January as the divorce loomed. ‘Kim has been in individual counseling and is at peace with where her life is headed.’”
Kardashian and West have formed the indomintable force known as Kimye since 2012 when they officially began dating. They tied the knot in 2014, and had four children together. Although they weathered many storms, 2020 proved to be the final straw.
The Split Has Been Coming for a Long Time
West has long been known for his very public mental health struggles. Openly straightforward about his struggle with bi-polar depression, West sometimes behaves in ways that are erratic or disturbing, and such a breakdown was on full display in 2020 after the rapper announced his intention to run for president.
TMZ explains, “It was during the last half of 2020 when things got super rocky for Kimye … West launched his Presidential campaign on July 4 and weeks later held a bizarre campaign event in South Carolina. At one point, a sobbing Kanye told a story of a discussion he had with Kim … talking about abortion when she was pregnant with their first child.
It wasn’t long after that when Kanye took a series of shots at the Kardashian/Jenner family on Twitter, at one point referring to the matriarch, Kris Jenner, as ‘Kris Jong-Un.’
Multiple sources with direct knowledge told us Kim was ready to call it quits after Kanye’s outbursts, if not for Kanye going through a serious bipolar episode. She had felt it would be cruel to end the marriage when he wasn’t doing well.”
However, as time went by, Kardashian was content with their marital separation and as West’s mental health improved, it was time to end things formally.
Couple is Committed to Co-Parenting Peacefully
According to sources close to the couple, the divorce is as amicable as it can be. Both Kardashian and West have committed to co-parenting peacefully and West has signaled he has no intention to contest Kardashian’s custody requests.
With a year-long slow-fall out of wedded bliss, they’ve both had plenty of times to come to terms with the separation and what they want from each other moving forward. With such a long planning period, the divorce is likely to proceed smoothly and allow both celebrities to move on with their lives as single parents.
TMZ reports, “…our sources say it’s as amicable as a divorce can be.
Kim is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s 4 kids. Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ Kanye is fine with the joint custody arrangement, and we’re told both Kim and Ye are committed to co-parenting together.
There’s a prenup and we’re told neither party is contesting it. In fact, our sources say they are already far along in reaching a property settlement agreement.
The docs, filed by disso queen Laura Wasser, don’t list a date of separation … it’s listed as to be determined. The date is almost irrelevant because their split has been so well-chronicled in the news and social media.”
Although fans of the Kimye entity will certainly be heartbroken, it sounds like both individuals are well on the path to a brighter future apart together.
