The Kardashian family is used to being on top of the world. However, this year they’ve struggled with all sorts of changes out of their control. From Kim Kardashian‘s husband Kayne West‘s public breakdowns and marital woes, to the ending of their hit show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, they’ve been dealing with a lot. Now, Kim is breaking down in a trailer released of an upcoming episode of David Letterman‘s Netflix hit, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.
Kimye’s Rough Year Began With COVID
In mid-March, just when the United States was beginning to grapple with the start of what would becoming a pandemic of epic proportions, the Kardashian-West house was hit with COVID-19. Kardashian talked to Graziaabout her experience trying to care for Kayne alone; “During the time that Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson announced that they had COVID. Kanye had it way at the beginning, when nobody really knew what was going on. It was so scary and unknown. I had my four babies and no-one else in the house to help.”
Kardashian continues, “I had to go and change his sheets and help him get him out of bed when he wasn’t feeling good. It was a challenge because it was so unknown. Changing his sheets with gloves and a face shield was really a scary time.”
From COVID to Presidential Candidate
After West had recovered, in July he made an announcement that was both shocking and utterly predictable; he was running for president of the United States. It’s hard to imagine how Kardashian felt about it, but in public she gave her husband some lukewarm support.
On Twitter, West posted, “We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States ! #2020VISION.”
In a show of support, Kardashian retweeted his post with an American flag emoji, but no other comment. After his announcement, West’s public behavior began taking a concerning turn. The rapper is known for behaving erratically in public and struggling with mental wellness, but this summer pushed West beyond his limits.
West Spills Too Many Beans
With a history of erratic public behavior, putting West up on stage with no filter seems in retrospect like a risky move. West had been claiming that wife Kim had been locking him up in Tweets that Kardashian basically ignored in public.
West stunned both audiences and his wife by speaking at a North Carolina about what Kardashian probably assumed would remain private; the near-abortion of one of their children. West said, without context while discussing abortion, “My mom saved my life. My dad wanted to abort me. My mom saved my life. There would’ve been no Kanye West because my dad was too busy … I almost killed my daughter.”
DailyWire reports that West then added, “‘Even if my wife wants to divorce me after this speech, she brought North into the world even when I didn’t want to. She stood up and she protected that child. You know who else protected a child? Forty-three years ago, who do you think protected a child?’ he said, sobbing.”
In the same rally, West also ranted about a bizarre interpretation he has of slave-freeing heroine Harriet Tubman; “[She] never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people.”
Kanye’s Behavior Escalates
The next day, West went on a Twitter spree, tweeting accusations about his wife and her family, including that he felt Kardashian was trying to lock him up. The rapper also suggested that Kardashian was having an affair with rapper and songwriter Meek Mill. West has spoke publicly before about his mental health struggles after a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and in what must have been Kardashian’s worst nightmare, his breakdown was occurring right in the public eye. A lot of West’s fears appear rooted in the possibility that Kardashian will have him locked up for being mentally unstable.
On July 25th, West sought medical attention for his anxiety, and later that day he reached out on Twitter to apologize to Kardashian for his behavior. Two days later, Kardashian flew to Cody, Wyoming, where West was staying, apparently to seek a resolution for their marriage. However, it seems telling that after DailyMail shared images of the couple having a tense discussion, Kardashian returned to Los Angeles alone.
OK! shares Kardashian’s response to West’s public breakdown, “‘As many of you know, Kanye has bipolar disorder. Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how complicated and painful it is to understand,’ she wrote in an Instagram post. ‘I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.
Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor,’ she continued. ‘People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgmental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.’”
The Marriage is Over?
As CELEBexplored in the end of July, the failure of the crisis talks in Cody seemed likely to be the end of Kimye. Kardashian’s tears on Letterman’s show seem to confirm rumors that the couple is splitting.
That’s not the only ending Kardashian is facing. In September, it was announced that long-time hit Keeping Up With The Kardashians would be coming to an end.
What’s In the Trailer?
The My Next Guesttrailer begins with Kardashian introducing herself in the aisle of a department store, “Hey guys!” Before Letterman pops into the frame asking, “Should I be in it or not?” and she responds, “You can!”
Other guests are introduced including Robert Downey Jr, Lizzo, and Dave Chapelle as Letterman’s voiceover talks about his enjoyment doing the show. Kardashian and Letterman take a selfie together, and Kardashian says, “and then I’ll AirDrop it to you. Do you know what AirDrop is?” Letterman says, “Suure,” before making a face showing he clearly has no clue.
After a witty exchange with Downey Jr, the scene cuts to Kardashian breaking down in tears. As she dabs away tears, Letterman says, “no, no, no, you alright?”
Kardashian says, “I wonder why I’m crying. I’ve talked about this before,” before the scene cuts to Chapelle and Lizzo. The trailer doesn’t elaborate on what brought Kardashian to tears, but with a year like she’s had, one can take their pick. The trailer shows some light-hearted moments with Downey Jr on his farm, and Lizzo talking about body positivity before cutting to Letterman and Kardashian clowning around in the store from the trailer intro.
Fans Will Have to Watch
