It’s here, you guys! Yep, after months of waiting, the cast of Legally Blonde 3 has finally announced the release date for the upcoming movie, so you might want to prepare yourselves. Yep, mark your calendars, people, because the highly anticipated reboot will hit theaters in May 2022.
During a virtual cast reunion on October 21, 2020, Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Jessica Cauffiel, Matthew Davis, Selma Blair, Alanna Ubach, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter and Holland Taylor teamed up to raise money for World Central Kitchen — an organization devoted to providing meals in the wake of natural disasters. And during their video chat, the original cast shared the release date, and a few more important details on the new movie.
But wait, what else did they reveal? Are all of the OG stars going to return for the third movie? What have they said about it in the past? And what is it going to be about? Here’s everything we know so far about Legally Blonde 3…
Mindy Kaling Is Writing The Script
Get this — Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor (who was behind Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) are writing the script. And during an October 2020 interview with Good Morning America, Kaling admitted that she definitely felt some pressure to get the third movie just right, especially considering how “iconic” the first two were.
“I was nervous, because the movie is so iconic,” she explained. “But then I thought, ‘It’d be really fun to see that character in her 40s. What is Elle Woods dealing with as a 41-year-old woman?’ And it’s been really funny to write. And I’m working on it with my friend Dan, and I think it’s going to be a great movie for Reese and people are going to love to see her in this part.”
As for how the third movie even came to be, the actress added, “I’d been working with [Witherspoon] on a couple movies and we’ve been friends for a while. And I have always quoted the movies to her. I was that annoying friend that would be like, ‘Bend and snap!’ to her. And [Witherspoon] asked me, ‘You know, I’d really love to revisit this character.’”
What Happened In The Original Movie?
As fans know, the original movie came out in July 2001, and it quickly stole fans’ hearts all around the world. It was about a girl named Elle Woods, who was determined to get her boyfriend, Warner Huntington III, back by proving she was not a dumb blonde. She ended up getting into law school, solving a murder case, becoming the top of her class and realizing she didn’t need Warner after all. Deadline reports that it grossed $141 million worldwide, while the sequel brought in $124 million.
So Is The Entire Cast Returning For The Third Movie?
We already know that Witherspoon (who played Elle) is going to reprise her role for the film, but who else from the original cast is going to return, you ask? Well, so far, only Witherspoon, Ubach (who played Serena), Coolidge (who played Paulette Parcelle) and Cauffiel (who played Margot) are listed on the movie’s IMDB page. So unfortunately, we still don’t know if the rest of the stars are going to appear in Legally Blonde 3. The plot details have also been kept under wraps, but hopefully they share some more info soon!
How Do The Stars Feel About Returning For The Third Movie?
During their recent hang out session, the stars dished on the franchise and what it was like to watch it become so popular. And it turns out, Witherspoon still has so much love for her character, Elle, which is why she is so excited to bring her back.
“I don’t think any of us knew what this film was going to turn out to be, or how much it would inspire young women and young people around the world,” she said. “I’ve traveled the entire world, and I’ve always, always — the movie that people stop me about is Legally Blonde. And the thing that actually really touches my heart is more people stop me and say, ‘I went to law school because of Elle Woods,’ which is really amazing.”
The blonde beauty continued, “We all got together and made this movie together that has inspired so many young people and it’s just such a gift… Every time people come up to me and tell me they love this movie, I give it all to you. I share it all with you all.”
Did They Share Any Behind-The-Scenes Secrets During Their Reunion?
The movie was pretty hilarious, and everyone can agree that one of the most beloved scenes of all time was when Elle taught an entire nail salon about her signature “bend and snap” move, which she used to pick up guys. And during the Zoom call, the cast spilled all the tea on what it was like to really film that show-stopping scene.
“We filmed that for a month,” Coolidge noted, with Witherspoon adding, “People always, always ask me to do the bend and snap. That was a full musical sequence that we ended up cutting out of the movie. We had all of these dancers behind us, including Ryan Heffington was one of the dancers. It was just so fun, and it just felt odd, because it was only one musical sequence. But then, it made so much sense when they made a whole musical out of the movie.”
Wow, we wonder if the new movie is going to have any musical sequences! We guess we’ll have to wait and see. Ugh, can it be May 2022 already?!
