Almost everyone knows the classic story of Alice in Wonderland by now — right?! Well guys, get ready to see it like never before because a brand new, reimagined musical version of the fairytale is reportedly coming to Netflix! That’s right, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platform is making a live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland, and just wait until you find out who is going to star in it!
Drum roll please… the one and only Sabrina Carpenter has reportedly been cast as the girl who falls into the rabbit hole. Wow, how epic is that going to be?! But wait, when is it going to come out, you ask? Who else has been cast in the new movie? What is it going to be about? And is it going to follow the same storyline as the Disney version we all know and love? Not to worry, people, because we have all the exciting deets. Here’s everything we know so far…
Sabrina Carpenter Has A Bigger Role In The New Movie Than You’d Think
Not only is the Girl Meets World star going to act in the upcoming flick, but get this — she’s reportedly going to produce it too! She has teamed up with the some of the people who made the recently released dance movie Work it to form a new production company called At Last Productions.
Is It Going To Follow The Original Storyline?
According to THR, the upcoming remake will take a “contemporary take” on the classic story, which was originally written by Lewis Carroll. The outlet reports that it’s going to take place at a music festival called “Wonderland,” but all other details are under wraps right now.
What Went Down In The Original ‘Alice In Wonderland?’
The story was most famously depicted in the 1951 Disney animated movie, but it has been told so many times in various children’s books and movies. It’s all about a young girl named Alice, who accidentally fell down a rabbit hole and discovered a magical land called Wonderland. There, she encountered an odd assortment of characters, including the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter. But things became risky for her when she met the evil Queen of Hearts.
Who Else Is Starring In It?
Unfortunately, the rest of the cast has not been announced just yet. But what we do know is that Ross Evans (who previously wrote the musical Catch the Moon) is working on the screenplay. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Dutton from Alloy Entertainment (who, besides Work It, also were behind the show You) are also producing it, alongside Carpenter.
When Is It Coming Out?
There’s unfortunately no release date for it just yet, but we really hope Netflix announces something soon!
What Other Live-Action Movies Should We Be Excited About?
It turns out, there’s a lot of remakes in the works! Filming just wrapped on Sony’s upcoming Cinderella remake, which is going to star Camila Cabello, Idina Menzel, James Corden and more. Plus, Disney recently announced that they’re turning Peter Pan into a live-action movie, and Yara Shahidi is going to make history in it as the first person of color to portray Tinker Bell! Alexander Molony (who made his acting debut in 2017 and has starred in TV shows like The Reluctant Landlord and Claude) is going to star as the boy who doesn’t want to grow up, and Ever Anderson (who briefly appeared in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, but hasn’t acted in anything else) is set to play Wendy. Wow, talk about a dream team.
There’s also a live-action remake of The Little Mermaid coming soon, and we can’t wait! Halle Bailey is going to play the red-haired mermaid, plus, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy and Jonah Hauer-King are also set to star in it. Harry Styles was originally being eyed for the role of Prince Eric, but he ultimately turned it down to focus on his music.
There’s also a new movie called Cruella (based off of 101 Dalmatians) coming to theaters on May 28, 2021, and Emma Stone is starring in it! Plus, Disney has announced that Pinocchio, Bambi, Lilo & Stitch, Robin Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Hercules are all getting live-action adaptations too! They also confirmed that there’s an Aladdin sequel and a Jungle Book sequel in the works, and based off how great the first movies were, we know the sequels are going to be epic!
That’s not all. Rumors also hit the web earlier this year that the network is going to remake the movie Tangled, and get this — Dove Cameron even tweeted that she wants to play Rapunzel! Until Disney confirms the news, that’s just speculation for now, but we really hope this is true!
