A clip from an old Teen Mom OG episode exposed Maci Bookout for exemplifying 'disturbing' parenting skills. In the resurfaced clip she's seen allowing her husband, Taylor McKinney, to beat Maverick, now six, if he didn't stop crying. This left fans upset with the reality star, sharing their thoughts online.
Disciplining Their Way
The scene takes place in the kitchen at Maci's home. She was eating with her husband, Maverick and their daughter Jayde. Maverick, sitting in a high chair, was acting out (as a baby naturally would.) Maci responded, "Maverick turn around and sit down." And, when he broke out in tears she added in, "You know your daddy will whip your butt."
Taylor chimed in saying, "Hey. Turn around and sit down. You're alright. You're selling it a little bit." To which Maci added in, "My God, I'm so glad the dad's here now. I used to have to whip Bentley's a** and hug him at the same time."
Safe to say, that wasn't the best comment for her to follow up with, according to fans.
Fans Express Disgust
The video on Reddit received a lot of [not so positive] feedback from viewers, one writing, "Is the physical discipline necessary for a baby or am I just extra? I know to each their own but this kind of disturbed me."
Another user agreed, "Hitting is never necessary for any age. Spanking is proven to cause psychological damage. It's illegal in over 30 countries. Parents that do it are abusive & lazy."
And, a third chimed in, "I have a 16-month-old and this makes me feel sick to my stomach. The way they’re both smirking and laughing about hitting a baby, it’s f**ked up.
One person pointed out the negative effect that physical discipline has on children, "There is no reason to ever hit a child. It doesn’t teach them anything, they either become scared of you or angry at you."
Another person added in, "Especially for something like not sitting in a chair calmly. That’s a baby?! They’re either tired, hungry, or bored. Solve the problem, don’t f**king hit and intimidate them into behaving."
Skeletons In The Closet
Maci allowing Taylor to put his hands on their children is frightening to picture. And, her history of men is just as frightening to remember. Her previous relationship with Ryan Edwards kept her under the radar of fans, also for negative reasons.
Maci and Ryan were introduced to the world in 2008. They gave birth to their first child, Bently Edwards, on October 27, 2018, and were engaged by 2009. However, by 2010 their relationship had come to an end. The pair never had a solid foundation and constantly got into heated fights, even after their split. Aside from the MTV drama, Ryan himself had his own dramatic storylines. He’s struggled with drug addiction and even went to jail for it at a point in time. In 2019 he went to rehab and has been on the path to sobriety however, the mistakes of his past still creep up from time to time.
Back in March, a clip of the parents of Ryan resurfaced on the internet. It revealed their heartbreak over his struggle with addiction, leaving fans just as sad. The video was discovered by active Reddit users titled, "This just made me sad… 'Ryan's all we have.'"
The clip reveals the parents of Edwards talking to the shows producer, Jenni, after him returning home from his time in rehab. His father shared, "I love the fact that if he calls me or I can him and he's on the phone, I can understand every word that he says. I love it." The couple admitted to it being "such a relief" having him in rehab. Edwards father continued, "It was the best I've ever felt because I knew he was gonna be okay. I knew that I wasn't gonna get a call and somebody tell me that I needed to come to the hospital or whatever."
In tears, Edwards mother added in, "I wonder everyday. My guards always up. I mean, I'm always looking for signs of something. I don't want something to happen and think I could've done something different."
The couple admitted to knowing that something was going on with Ryan in the midst of his addiction. "We're not stupid and we're not naive," stated his father. And although there's always room for greater knowledge and understanding, they explained to the producer that in time they did become aware of his behaviors and triggers when in an intoxicated state.
During the Teen Mom reunion episode in 2021, an explosive fight broke out between the family of Edwards and Maci's current husband.
A source told The Ashley's Reality Roundup, “Ryan and Mackenzie, as well as Jen and Larry, were all on a call with production on Tuesday informing them they won’t be on the show anymore going forward. The Edwards were informed that Maci’s reps wanted to go a different direction and showcase all of her abilities. Maci went to production and explained she wanted her story to cover all the parts of her life and no longer focus on Ryan and his family.”
Ryan's son, Bently, 13, refuses to see his dad until he agrees to go to therapy with him. Bently, has been seeing a therapist for the past two seasons of the MTV show for what we believe to be about his fathers struggle with addiction and his legal battles.
