As of this spring, Moulin Rouge will have a new Satine – the ‘Leave (Get Out).’ singer, JoJo! If you don’t know the star for her platinum-selling music then maybe you know her for her acting in Aquamarine and RV. Born Joanna Noëlle Levesque, JoJo grew up being inspired by Whitney Houston, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald. During her first time on Kids Say the Darndest Things (1988) she performed ‘Respect’ at the request of Bill Cosby which quickly caught the attention of many, one of those people being Oprah Winfrey. From there, her career began to take off and she later signed a contract with Blackground Records. JoJo even toured with Usher before releasing her hit single, ‘Leave (Get Out).’
The news of JoJo taking on the role of Satine in Broadway’s Moulin Rouge was announced on February 23rd by the star herself.
The Dream Come True of ‘Moulin Rouge’
The singer wrote a heartfelt message to Instagram followers when announcing the big news of her new role in Moulin Rouge.
“Truth. Beauty. Freedom. Love.” she quoted the musical’s tagline.
She continued. “So I can’t believe I’m finally able to say this… I’m making my Broadway debut in MOULIN ROUGE ❗️❗️❗️”
JoJo then spoke from the heart, sharing her first experience with Moulin Rouge as a child. “When I first saw this musical I fell instantly head over heels in love. I watched from the edge of my seat, hanging onto every word of every song. This show is a full on feast for the senses and the opportunity to play Satine feels like the culmination of so many dreams. I cannot believe I get to join this phenomenal cast and company!!!! You guys blow me away!!!”
She even made sure to credit the musical current lead, “* special love & respect to @ashleyloren who currently SLAYS as Satine: theee most incredible badass singer actress artist i’m lucky to call friend and experience her sisterhood and generosity of spirit. *”
The official Instagram account for Moulin Rouge also shared the announcement writing, “We’re thrilled to announce platinum-selling recording artist @iamjojo is our Sparkling Diamond beginning April 11! Ticket link in bio, Bohemians. You know what to do 💋💎”

She will play the role of Satine in Moulin Rouge at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre starting on Tuesday, April 11 for just 14 weeks, concluding on July 16. She will be performing with the star of Christian, Derek Klena, alongside other vet members of the production.
