Hayley Kiyoko refuses to be silenced. The singer protested a recent law that restricts drag shows in Tennessee by welcoming two drag queens on stage with her while performing in Nashville on Monday. The law bans “adult cabaret” in public or in front of minors. Kiyoko’s show was an all-ages event and shared that prior to her show she was warned by an “undercover cop” that “having a drag performance at my all-ages show could result in legal action.”

In an Instagram video, Kiyoko shared that she relayed the warning to the local drag queens, who went by the names of LiberTea and Ivy St. James, and chose to proceed with the performance anyways. The singer shared, “They showed no fear and said they wanted to continue with the show and come out on stage.”
Kiyoko wrote in her caption, “I never want to put anyone in a position to be at risk or in danger in any way.” Adding, “But also where is the line of being silenced? How do we navigate these absurd threats and laws against our community? I find pride in making sure my concerts are safe places for ALL. How can I do that if we aren’t allowed to be ourselves, especially at a predominantly queer concert? We deserve to have a safe space to be ourselves while we navigate the evil that is threatening our own existence.”
