Check out this list to help you choose a Netflix Christmas movie to start your journey!

Holidate starring Emma Roberts

The latest addition to the Netflix holiday cannon is Holidate, starring Emma Roberts as Sloane and hunky Australian Luke Bracy as Jackson. After a horrible Christmas being the only single member of her family, Sloane tries to return some terrible gifts and runs into Jackson, who is reeling from his own horrible Christmas experience with a casual girlfriend. The two vow to be each other’s low pressure dates for New Year’s Eve, and then extend the idea to all the major holidays for the rest of the year.

This movie is a fun twist on classic Christmas movie tropes, stretching the holiday movie format to include in Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Halloween, and even Mother’s Day. With an R rating, this movie is raunchier than most holiday movies, so be aware of that if you are looking for something to watch with the whole family.

A Christmas Prince Trilogy starring Rose McIver

iZombie star Rose McIver stars in this Netflix Christmas movie trilogy, which sparked the trend of Netflix releasing more campy holiday films. Rose plays an American journalist, who goes to the fictional Aldovia to work on a story, and accidentally ends up being mistaken for a young princess’s new tutor. The young princess’s dashing older brother (Ben Lamb) and the journalist have a connection, and she gets swept up into royal life.

A Christmas Prince was released in 2017, followed by A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding in 2018 and A Christmas Princes: The Royal Baby in 2019. Sadly, there will be no new installment this year, but three movies is still enough to fill up your holiday movie calendar! These movies are cheesy escapism to give you a break from this crazy year.

The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens

In this Christmas-themed adaptation of classic novel The Prince and the Pauper, High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens plays two characters, an American baker and a Princess from the fictional Belgravia. When the baker and the princess discover their uncanny resemblance, they decide to switch places to see what life is like in the other’s shoes. Along the way, hijinks ensue and the ladies fall in love with two handsome men, played by Sam Palladio from Nashville and Nick Sagar from Shadowhunters.

This campy movie is a wholesome Christmassy take on a story we all know and love! Vanessa charms as both women, clearly having fun in both roles. A sequel, The Princess Switch: Switched Again, will be out this November starring Vanessa as yet another doppelgänger, leading to even more fun drama as the three ladies navigate the holiday season together. As a fun bonus, this movie takes place in the same fictional universe as A Christmas Prince!

The Knight Before Christmas also starring Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens is the queen of her own Netflix Christmas movie empire! She also stars in The Knight Before Christmas, which is about a cynical high school science teacher who meets a medieval knight (Josh Whitehouse of Poldark fame) who was accidentally transported to modern times.

This movie is a literal interpretation of the romantic notion of falling for a knight in shining armor, with a sweet Christmas backdrop. Again, Vanessa is clearly enjoying herself in her campy role, and she seems to love being part of the Netflix Christmas movie multiverse. Once you buy into how outlandish the premise of the movie is, the movie is a lot of silly fun.

Let It Snow starring lots of young actors you know and love

Let It Snow is based on the popular young adult novel with the same name, co-written by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle. It takes place on Christmas Eve, when a small town in snowed in due to a big storm. The cast is full of familiar faces: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse lead Shameik Moore, Isabella Merced from Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Mitchell Hope of Descendants fame, and many more.

This film is a good watch because breaks from the traditional Christmas movie format. It follows the stories of an ensemble cast of diverse teenagers, instead of just one (usually white) adult couple. Let It Snow is about both romances and friendships, and includes a queer storyline! It is the most diverse option on this list, by far.
