For those who forgot, the track was inspired by Cyrus’ messy relationship with Nick Jonas — she held up a picture of him in the music video, so it was no secret that it was about him — and the anniversary has given us all the #Niley feels. That’s why we decided to round up their love story from start to finish. From love triangles to cheating rumors, it’s safe to say that the two stars definitely went through a lot together. Here’s a complete timeline of their whirlwind romance…

Nick Jonas And Miley Cyrus First Met In 2006

Nick Jonas Miley Cyrus Relationship Timeline

Let’s flash back all the way to 2006. Since Cyrus and Jonas were two of the biggest stars on Disney Channel at the time, when news hit the web that they were an item, it was a pretty big deal. According to the Hannah Montana alum, they met at a charity event and get this — they instantly became a couple.

“We became boyfriend and girlfriend the day we met,” she previously told Seventeen Magazine. “He was on a quest to meet me, and he was like, ‘I think you’re beautiful and I really like you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, I like you so much.’”

She also opened up about the day they met in her book, Miles To Go. She wrote, “Hannah Montana had only been on the air for a few months when I went to a benefit for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. I remember the exact date, June 11, 2006. It was the day I met my first love. I knew from a friend that he thought I was pretty. He came up to me with a bunch of guy friends and introduced himself. Instantly, I wanted them all to go away just to be with him. He started to shake my hand, and I said ‘I don’t do handshakes, I do hugs.’ When he hugged me, I noticed his scratchy shirt and I blurted out: ‘I hate your shirt!’ So that was the first thing I said to him: ‘I hate your shirt.’”

After that, they quickly became couple goals. Although they didn’t talk about their relationship much publicly, a few pics of them cozying up leaked online. Jonas also later revealed that Cyrus was his first kiss!

“The first person I kissed was Miley Cyrus, and I kissed her outside of California Pizza Kitchen in Hollywood – very romantic,” the Jonas Brothers member revealed to Radio 1. “I’d just had a pizza that had onions all over it. I’m sure that my breath smelled terrible.”

But They Broke Up In 2007

It’s still unclear what went wrong in the end, but the pair went their separate ways in 2007. Cyrus explained in her book that they had been fighting a lot, but that when they broke up she was compeltely heartbroken.

“Prince Charming and I broke up on December 19, 2007,” she explained. “The hardest day ever. My life felt like it had ground to a halt, but the rest of the world kept right on rolling. I was on tour. People were counting on me, but my head — no, my heart — was dizzy.”

She also told Seventeen, “At first, I bawled for a month straight. I was so sad. I just went into this weird funk. And I dyed my hair black. When we were dating, Nick wanted me to get highlights – and so I did that, and I got myself looking great. And then, on the day we broke up, I was like, I want to make my hair black now – I don’t want to look pretty; I want to look hard-core. I was rebelling against everything Nick wanted me to be. And then I was like, I’ve got to be by myself for now, and just figure out who I really am. We still [love each other], but we [aren’t] in love with each other. For two years he was basically my 24/7. But it was really hard to keep it from people. We were arguing a lot, and it really wasn’t fun.”

That’s when the actress decided to write “7 Things,” which lists all the things she loved and hated about her ex.

“The seven things I hate about you / Oh, you / You’re vain, your games, you’re insecure / You love me, you like her / You made me laugh, you made me cry, I don’t know which side to buy,” the lyrics read. “Your friends, they’re jerks, when you act like them, just know it hurts / I wanna be with the one I know / And the seventh thing I hate the most that you do / You make me love you.”

“I was angry when I wrote ‘7 Things.’ I wanted to punish him, to get back at him for hurting me,” Cyrus said about the track. “It starts with a list of what I ‘hate.’ But I’m not a hater. My heart knew from the start that it was going to turn into a love song. Why does he get a love song? Because I don’t hate him. I won’t let myself hate anybody.”

Jonas later admitted that he was “flattered” by the song.

It Appeared That Nick Jonas Had Moved On

After that, rumors started to spread that Jonas was dating Selena Gomez after he was caught spending a lot of time with her. But things didn’t end there. In 2009, the entire internet went into a frenzy when the singer was photographed out to lunch with Cyrus! After that, they became inseparable again, and they even wrote the song “Before the Storm” together.

“[Me and Miley] both liked the same guy when we were 16. It was just a Hilary DuffLindsay Lohan thing, like, ‘Oh, my God, we like the same boy!’” Gomez later said about the love triangle. “We are now completely settled in our own lives.”

They Went Their Separate Ways A Second Time

There’s not a lot of info on what went wrong the second time, but by 2009 they had split again. How do we know? Well, that’s when Cyrus fell for Liam Hemsworth on set of The Last Song, starting an on-and-off 10-year relationship with him and ending Niley forever. The musician later wrote the song “Wedding Bells” about finding out that she and Hemsworth were getting married and being jealous.

“She says, ‘Can you keep a secret / A ceremony set for June / I know it’s a rush but I just love him so much / I hope that you can meet him soon,’” Jonas sings in the emotional ballad. “No, I don’t wanna love / If it’s not you / I don’t wanna hear the wedding bells prove / That we can’t try / One last time / But I don’t wanna hear the wedding bells chime.”

Now There’s No Bad Blood Between Them

When asked where their relationship stood in 2016, Jonas explained that although they’re not close, he had no hard feelings for the brunette beauty.

“I don’t have a relationship with her now really, but that’s not because we have any bad blood — we just sort of run in different circles,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s pretty great, because I love ‘Wrecking Ball’ so much. I still think it’s one of the best pop songs of the last 10 years. And you know, she’s always been outspoken and authentic to who she is, so it was only a matter of time before she really owned that, and I’m proud of her … It’s a lot like watching your high school crush do well, just on a bigger scale.”
