But that cool shoulder just turned ice cold and the pair are in a head-to-head over the soul of the Republican party. Trump has some fighting words for the Senate Minority leader, and he's not holding back.

Shaky Love Affair Between Trump and McConnell Has Officially Come to an End

Back in January of 2021, Mitch McConnell sang a death knell for his love song with Donald Trump.

Trump was looking for Republicans to circle the wagons and protect him in the wake of the January 6 riots, but many Republican leaders decided that they weren't going to tow the MAGA line. Mitch McConnell was chief among those holding Trump accountable for what occurred at the Capitol, and Trump didn't take too kindly to it.

Over the past year and a half, they've sparred back and forth in disagreements on policies and how to act under the current administration, but Trump is finally over and done with trying to make peace with McConnell.

Trump took to Truth Social late Tuesday to lob a volley at the Senate Minority leader, writing, "The Democrats have Mitch McConnell and his lovely wife, Elaine “Coco” Chao, over a barrel. He and she will never be prosecuted, as per the last paragraphs of this story, as long as he continues to give the Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND. He was afraid to use the “Debt Ceiling Card” in order to stop the most expensive waste of money in our Country’s history, to be spent on the Green New Deal, which will only cause one thing, a Depression."

Trump added, "These expenditures are something our Country can never recover from. Mitch McConnell is not an opposition leader, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever they want. He is afraid of them, and will not do what was to be done. A new Republican leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!"

HuffPost reports, "Trump also tore into McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao, who resigned as Trump’s transportation secretary days after the Capitol riot. Trump cited an article in the conservative outlet The Federalist reporting the couple have been using their positions to make money in China.

Over the weekend, Trump bashed McConnell as a “broken down hack” and said he should spend more time and money helping GOP candidates than 'helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China!'

Trump allies. including Fox News personality Sean Hannity, also took swipes at McConnell, accusing him of abandoning his own party’s candidates."

The idea that McConnell is not doing enough is a curious take, given that he is using every option within his power to stymy Biden's agenda and the Democrats in the Senate. And Trump's use of the phrase, "opposition leader" is also curious. It shows insight into the way he sees things playing out right now. This isn't a political arena to Trump, it's a war.

For now, McConnell continues to signal that he'd support Trump in 2024 if he becomes the Republican nominee. But it's clear that McConnell isn't the only Republican bigwig to hope Trump isn't their guy.

Trump is Working Overtime to Appear He Doesn't See the Danger: Bad News

While he's attempting to dethrone Republican leadership - to what effectiveness has yet to be seen - Trump is working overtime to appear unbothered.

He's looking so unbothered in fact, that it's clear he's panicking. Trump is used to wiggling out of legal trouble, earning him the nickname "Teflon Don" in the past.

But there are so many investigations bearing down on the former President that he has nowhere to run, and the only way out is through them.

It's an unfortunate reality for the Trump team that their guy is loaded with baggage and could face criminal indictments, even as he pretends not to notice the hands pressing down on his shoulders. For now, he's playing golf, smiling wide, kissing babies, passing out primary endorsements, and looking everywhere but at the Department of Justice's team of investigators and Georgia's investigations. With the January 6 hearings resuming next month, this time period is the calm before the storm for Trump, and he's using it to paint a picture of a man who's assured of his own innocence.
