The "world's first digital bakery" is taking playing with your food to another dimension. Sugar Lab is the bakery of the future, creating beautifully detailed desserts out of a 3D printer. Yea, you read that right. And we agree, 'why hasn't sugar in a 3D printer been thought of until now?' Anyways, besides the point, because now here it is.
Kyle von Hasseln and Liz von Hasseln are the names behind this bespoke idea that is now Sugar Lab. The pair were grad students in Downtown LA when they tested their curiosities, in 2011. To their surprise, it worked, and well, the rest is history.
And now, baking out all of the emotions that have been building up this season, Sugar Lab, has printed a new set of sugar confections inspired by Netflix's hit show, "Stranger Things".
The six piece set with be $25 and can be pre-ordered online. It included D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20.

The von Hasseln's developed the first and only technology that has the ability to print complex 3D food objects. In fact, they teamed up with 3D System [link] and Brill to bring make their vision a reality. Their site writes, "After tones of R&D, the 3D printer they first imagined is finally available as a powerful new tool for the culinary arts."
When this all began, almost a decade ago, Kyle and Liz attempted their idea on their antique Z310 gypsum 3D printer that they initially used to print architectural models, you know, being that they were actually architects and all. When seeing how well it worked, they explained, "the crystalline sugar had a white-translucent glow that was really captivating and defied gravity in ways that didn't seem possible by conventional techniques."
Sugar Lab was founded in 2012, just a year after testing their curiosities. And, by 2018 they were 3D printing sugar sculptures for pastry chefs across the globe. Sugar Lab began partnering up with top-tier chefs to print complex yet beautiful sugar sculptures, earning them a lot of respect and legitimacy in the culinary world.
