Teen Mom's Farrah Abraham and her daughter Sophia have recently shared pics of a sweet but heartbreaking yearly tradition.
Few Teen Mom stars have endured as much as Abraham, and the sweet yearly pilgrimage is a reminder of where it all started - and with who it all started.
Paying Tribute to the One that Made Her a Mom
Abraham's journey to motherhood started with a tremendous loss: the father of her baby, Derek Underwood.
When she first appeared on Teen Mom, Abraham acted dismissive of and angry towards Underwood. But later, she came out with the disturbing revelation that she was actually still very much in love with him when he died - and it was for her mom that she acted the way she did.
Abraham was never allowed to grieve normally and wasn't respected as she processed her enormous loss and jumped into motherhood alone with both feet. This disruption is part of what led to a break between herself and her mother down the road.
Now, Abraham is fully grown and their daughter Sophia is 13 herself, just a few years from the age her mom was when she conceived a baby - and lost the love of her life in almost one fell swoop.
Without her mom's crushing influence, Abraham is able to maintain a yearly tradition that is both sweet and heartbreaking.
On Mother's Day, she and Sophia - and this year, Underwood's father, Sophia's grandfather, attended - visit Underwood's grave.
For this year's sweet family photo, Abraham shared, "#mothersday my Mother's Day is always made visiting the man who made me a mom. God is great! Love being in #midwest love my family! #blessed proud of @sophialabraham #fyp."
The trio left flowers and a balloon for their dearly departed loved one, and it was a sweet sign of how full circle Abraham's healing has come as she's now giving herself the grace to grieve the loss that started a long and lonely path for herself and her daughter.
Farrah's Got Big Plans for the Future - Baby, a Career Change and More
While all of this moments show how far Abraham has come in her journey and in separating herself from her mom's influence, there are even bigger changes on the horizon.
Abraham has recently opened up about her plans to make a big career change, turning to comedy to deal with some of the trauma she's healing from. Comedian Howie Mandel has helped mentor her on her new path.
In addition, Abraham recently talked about the possibility of adopting a child.
CELEB reported Abraham's comments at the time; "[While on Mandel's podcast]... Abraham also discussed potentially adopting a child.
During her time on Howie Mandell's podcast Abraham got onto the topic of adoption. And, although she was open about sharing her interest in it, she admitted to having to 'keep it secretive' if she was to. The single mom shared, 'I think I would just have to keep that, like, secretive just so my child that I do adopt could just really live their best life and not be targeted.'"
It's good to see Abraham on a life path that she wants instead of one that's been chosen for her. And despite the media firestorm that loves to explode at every move Abraham makes, she's done well for herself - even if some of her choices have been controversial.
Hopefully the year to come for Abraham and Sophia will include more healing, including patching up some rocky old relationships, and more moving forward. But taking a moment to stop and pay tribute to Underwood is a sweet reminder that love from the past can help shape a positive future.
