Did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ‘Lie’ Cause a Royal Rift?

Last week, news broke that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were involved in a “near catastrophic” car chase in New York City.
The incident came after Markle was awarded a “Women of Vision” award for her humanitarian efforts.
A spokesperson for the couple shared details, igniting a whirlwind of concern for the couple whose brush with the paparazzi was terrifyingly similar to the media car chase which lead to the death of Prince Harry’s mom, Princess Diana, in the ’90s.
Here’s what was reported last week:
A spokesperson for the couple said in a statement, “Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and [Meghan’s mom] Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.”
They added, “This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers.”
The statement continues, “While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety. Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all involved.”

Harry and Meghan’s team allege that traffic violations incurred during the chase included driving on the pavement and through red lights, reversing down a one-way street, illegally blocking a moving vehicle and driving while photographing and while on the phone. They also allege that that while those involved were confronted by uniformed police multiple times, they continued the pursuit and that there is footage taken from security along with other evidence to support these allegations.
But a cabbie who drove the couple on that night and the NYPD offered watered-down versions of the same story, saying basically that things were under control and that there was no “near-catastrophe.”
Since then, it appears that the royals in London have not reached out to Harry and Meghan to check on them.
And it left some speculating on the reason for the silence from the London royals.
Do they believe the couple lied? Are they sour over the incident, which one royal expert said was a “slap in the face” of newly-minted King Charles, since Markle stayed home from his coronation just days before?
It’s worth noting that even if things weren’t as bad as they seemed initially, Harry is likely to face a lot of trauma after dealing with an incident even remotely resembling what happened to his mom, so to call what they did a lie seems like media sensationalism.
It’s hard to say why the London royal family is so silent on the incident, but it’s clear that this is exactly the kind of silence that hurts Meghan and Harry.
And that could well be the point of it all. King Charles is reportedly facing pressure from his new Queen consort Camilla to cut ties with Harry, because – after all – “they’re not royals anymore.”
According to those in the palace, the tension between the new King and Queen has reached a fever pitch.
Could Charles be bowing to pressure from his wife to ice Harry out? Or did they communicate behind the scenes?
For now, both the Montecito and London royal couples are staying silent on the subject.
