In March of 2020, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced that they would be retiring from public royal duties. If fans of the couple and devoted followers were surprised, the Queen was not as Harry had spoken with her prior to making the announcement. Now, 6 months after they quietly retired from the public eye and royal duties to raise their family, they embark on a new public journey of another kind.
Harry and Meghan step down
Back in March, Prince Harry and Meghan released a statement announcing their intention to step down from royal duties. The statementread, “As we can all feel, the world at this moment seems extraordinarily fragile. Yet we are confident that every human being has the potential and opportunity to make a difference—as seen now across the globe, in our families, our communities and those on the front line—together we can lift each other up to realise the fullness of that promise.
What’s most important right now is the health and wellbeing of everyone across the globe and finding solutions for the many issues that have presented themselves as a result of this pandemic.
As we all find the part we are to play in this global shift and changing of habits, we are focusing this new chapter to understand how we can best contribute.
While you may not see us here, the work continues.

Adjusting to a more private life, relatively
Although Prince Harry and Meghan will never have what most consider a low-profile or private life, they have adjusted to life out of a regular family. Relatively normal, anyway. They have been photographed bikinglike normal people, albeit in Malibu, and discussing the importance of voting with a neighbor. The neighbor just happens to be Gloria Steinman.
6 months later, they make plans to work with Netflix
Reportedly, Prince Harry and Meghan have been pitchingideas in Hollywood and looking for someone to bite. In their quest for financial independence, the pair has struggled to come up with a deal that would provide a quality of life that they’re used to. However, in August of 2020, Netflix decided to go for it.
Varietyreports, “’Our lives, both independent of each other and as a couple, have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,’ Meghan and Harry said in a statement. ‘Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.’
The couple will be focused on creating a wide variety of series about stories and issues that are close to their hearts, such as those that their newly formed nonprofit, Archewell, will highlight. Several projects are already in development, including a nature docuseries and an animated series centered on inspirational women.
‘As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens,’ they said. ‘We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.’
The Duke and Duchess want to highlight diverse voices in front of and behind the camera, and are committed to diverse hiring practices for key roles at their production company, according to a source familiar with the deal.
‘Harry and Meghan have inspired millions of people all around the world with their authenticity, optimism and leadership,’ Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos added. ‘We’re incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home – and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere.’”
Netflix has a unique opportunity to work with the royals
Harry and Meghan fans have a lot to look forward to with this new project. As Netflix works hard to compete with new streaming giants like Disney+ and established competitors like Hulu and Amazon Prime, an exclusive deal with the royal couple offers a unique opportunity. The New York Times, which first broke the story of the Netflix deal, says the couple may appear on camera, but that isn’t the focus of their work, “Harry and Meghan may appear on camera in documentary programming. But she has repeatedly made it clear that she has no plans to return to acting, having last appeared in the cable drama ‘Suits,’ which concluded its run in 2019. Their content will be exclusive to Netflix.“
Details are sparse as of yet
While we do know that the deal has been struck and Prince Harry and Meghan have launched an unnamed production company, details remain sparse. It is unclear when their content will be available, specifically what sort of content they will produce, and how much they will provide viewers. It’s exciting to see what this next chapter holds for the pair as they work to distance themselves from Prince Harry’s royal image and look to embrace the life of a working family. If that family were multi-millionaires living in Malibu, anyway.
