It’s official, you guys, Selena Gomez is headed back to the big screen! That’s right, the former Disney star was just cast in a brand new movie, called In the Shadow of the Mountain, and we have all the exciting details for you.
So what is the movie going to be about, you ask? Who will Gomez play? When will it hit theaters? And who else is starring in it? Not to worry, people, because we’ve got you covered. From the release date to the cast, here’s everything you need to know…
What Is ‘In the Shadow of the Mountain’ Going To Be About?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, In the Shadow of the Mountain is going tell the story of Silvia Vásquez-Lavado. For those who don’t know, the mountaineer was the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest and the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits — a challenge to climb the highest mountain on each continent. She was also a victim of childhood assault and neglect, and has helped organize many treks to Mt. Everest’s base camp for other women who have endured abuse. Gomez is set to play Vásquez-Lavado in the upcoming flick, and we can’t wait!
Who Is Behind The New Movie?
Elgin James (who was previously behind movies like Little Birds, Lowriders and more) is going to write and direct the film.
“Silvia is a force of nature,” co-producer Donna Gigliotti told the outlet. “[The other producer, Scott Budnick] and I are so excited to work with Elgin and Selena to tell this story of resilience, courage, adventure and humanity.”
Budnick added, “We are thrilled to get to work bringing Silvia’s incredible and inspiring story to life onscreen.”
It’s reportedly going to come out in winter 2022.
What Else Has Selena Gomez Been Up To Recently?
During quarantine, Gomez has definitely done a lot. She released her very own makeup line called Rare Beauty and starred in her own HBO cooking show called Selena + Chef! Plus, the brunette beauty is also set to return as Mavis in the upcoming fourth addition to the Hotel Transylvania series. Oh, and did we mention that she recently confirmed that she was working on her next album?! Woo-hoo!
What Has Selena Gomez Previously Acted In?
The “Bad Liar” songstress is most known for her role as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, but she also acted in Hannah Montana, Ramona and Beezus, Monte Carlo, Spring Breakers, Getaway, Rudderless, Behaving Badly, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, In Dubious Battle, The Dead Don’t Die, A Rainy Day in New York, Dolittle and more.
What Other Movies Do We Have To Look Forward To?
It turns out, Gomez isn’t the only big star who was cast in a movie recently. Yep, you might want to brace yourselves because Harry Styles just landed a role in the upcoming flick Don’t Worry Darling, and everyone is pretty pumped about it! That’s right, it was announced last month that Styles was going to star in the movie alongside Florence Pugh (who fans may recognize from Little Women, Midsommar, Black Widow and more), Chris Pine (who is most known for his role in Star Trek, but also acted in Wonder Woman, Into the Woods and others) and Fifty Shades of Grey‘s Dakota Johnson. But want to know the best part? Drum roll please… Olivia Wilde is directing the movie! Plus, Katie Silberman (who was behind films like Isn’t It Romantic, the Netflix movie Set It Up and more) wrote the screenplay. Wow, talk about a dream team.
Deadline reported that the film “is set in an isolated, utopian community in the 1950s California desert.” According to Collider, Pugh will play “an unhappy housewife who slowly begins to question her own sanity when she starts to notice strange occurrences.” As for Pine, he will star as “the leader of a mysterious worksite.” The outlet adds, “All the men are employed just outside of town, and Pine’s character is revered by all of his staffers and their wives, almost in a cult-like fashion.”
Johnson’s character reportedly lives next door to Pugh, and “will begins to exhibit strange, paranoid behavior and tries to warn Pugh that everything in their community is not what it seems.” But what about the 1D heartthrob, you ask? Well, Collider reported that the 26-year-old will play “Pugh’s picture-perfect husband, who loves her dearly, but is hiding a dark secret from her.” Sounds intense!
Plus, Ariana Grandehas reportedly been cast in a new movie called Don’t Look Up! According to Deadline, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Timothée Chalamet, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley are also starring in the film. Netflix has reportedly teamed up with Adam McKay (who was behind movies like Step Brothers, Anchorman, The Big Short and more) to make the movie.
The outlet reported that it will follow “two low-level astronomers who embark on a media tour to warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will destroy Earth.” How awesome does that sound?! It’s unfortunately still unclear who Grande will play, but either way, we know this movie is going to be amazing. There’s seriously so many upcoming movies to be excited about!
