Get ready to see Selena Gomez like you’ve never seen her before, you guys! Yep, it was just announced that the singer is going to star in a brand new movie called Spiral, and boy, does her role sound like it’s going to be intense. It turns out, the former Disney star is going to play an influencer who is addicted to the internet in the upcoming psychological thriller, and we cannot wait to see what goes down!
But wait, when is the film coming out? Who else is starring in it? And what else do we know about it? Not to worry, you guys, because we went ahead and rounded up all the exciting details for you! Here’s everything you need to know about Gomez’s new movie Spiral…
What Do We Know About ‘Spiral?’
According to Deadline, Gomez’s character’s “addiction to social media is causing her body to literally fall apart.” Woah, sounds intense! And wait until you find out who is producing the flick. Drum roll please… It’s the one and only Drake! Plus, Petra Collins — who previously worked with Gomez on her “Fetish” music video — is set to direct it. Future the Prince (who was also behind Euphoria with Drake), Matthew Budman and Sumaiya Kaveh will also serve as executive producers. As for the script, that was created by Collins and Melissa Broder (who is an acclaimed author, essayist and poet). It’s still unclear who else is going to star in the movie, but with a team like that we know it is going to be epic.
What Does Selena Gomez Think About Social Media?
So the actress may be playing someone who is addicted to social media in the movie, but in real life, Gomez isn’t really a fan of it. She actually told Vogue back in March 2021 that her team runs her Instagram and Twitter accounts, and that she hasn’t used the apps in more than three years.
“I woke up one morning and looked at Instagram, like every other person, and I was done,” she explained. “I was tired of reading horrible things. I was tired of seeing other people’s lives. After that decision, it was instant freedom. My life in front of me was my life, and I was present, and I could not have been more happy about it.”
Is She Starring In Any Other New Movies?
It turns out, this isn’t the only movie that the “Rare” songstress is working on! Back in November 2020, news hit the web that she had been cast in another brand new flick, called In the Shadow of the Mountain, and everyone was pretty excited about it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, In the Shadow of the Mountain is going tell the story of Silvia Vásquez-Lavado. For those who don’t know, the mountaineer was the first Peruvian woman to summit Mount Everest and the first openly gay woman to complete the Seven Summits — a challenge to climb the highest mountain on each continent. She was also a victim of childhood assault and neglect, and has helped organize many treks to Mt. Everest’s base camp for other women who have endured abuse. Gomez is set to play Vásquez-Lavado in the upcoming flick, and it’s reportedly going to come out in winter 2022.
Plus, she’s currently filming an upcoming Hulu series called Only Murders in the Building. Besides Gomez, it also stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Aaron Dominguez and it will reportedly follow “three strangers (Martin, Short and Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one.” Oh, and did we mention that the pop star is also set to return as Mavis in the upcoming fourth addition to the Hotel Transylvania series?! Woo-hoo!
What About Her Music?
“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” she revealed. “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’ ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people it still wasn’t enough. I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”
She also told the outlet that she wants to spend more time producing and to “give herself a real shot at acting,” so expect to see her in some more roles soon.
“I haven’t even touched the surface of what I want to do,” she continued. “The parts that I want are the ones I need help with. I can’t wait for the moment when a director can see that I’m capable of doing something that no one’s ever seen.”
Throughout the interview, the 28-year-old also reflected on her rise to fame, and she said she was sick of being referred to as a Disney girl.
“That was my job in a way — to be perfect,” she said of her time on Wizards of Waverly Place. “You’re considered a figure kids look up to, and they take that seriously there. I think I spent so many years just trying to say the right thing to people for the sake of keeping myself sane. I’m just such a people-pleaser. I still live with this haunting feeling that people still view me as this Disney girl.”
