We have good news, people — Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello are still going strong! Despite reports claiming that the pair was “taking a break” back in August, the singer just confirmed that they’re definitely still together.
Taking to her Instagram to gush over Mendes’ upcoming song, “Wonder,” she wrote, “The world could use some magic, beauty, and ‘Wonder’ always, but especially right now. @shawnmendes what a gorgeous gift to the world. He’s crafted this album with every last bit of his soul, his spirit and his essence with the purest of intentions. My love, I’m so proud of the person you are and I’m so excited for people to see and hear your heart.”
“My love?!” Yeah, it definitely seems like they are not broken up after all! Phew, that’s a relief. But wait, when did these two even start dating, you ask? How did they go from best friends to boyfriend and girlfriend? And when did they develop feelings for each other? Not to worry, people, because we broke down their entire love story from start to finish for you. Here’s a complete timeline of their relationship…
When Did Cabello And Mendes First Meet?

Although they didn’t start dating until years later, their relationship actually dates all the way back to 2014. That’s right, the two stars first met while they were both on tour with Austin Mahone, but at the time, they were only friends. And the “Havana” songstress later admitted to Variety that she hardly even saw Mendes during the tour.
“When we were on tour together, I never saw him,” she said. “He would go to his tour bus and practice guitar, then go onstage, and then go back and practice guitar. He’s the most dedicated, driven person I know.”
What Were Their First Impressions Of Each Other?

Luckily for us, V Magazine asked the couple what they first thought about each other, and their answers were everything.
“I remember I wanted to hang out with you, but you were always on the tour bus, just learning guitar,” Cabello recalled, to which Mendes responded, “Yeah, that was me. I didn’t talk to anybody. You were the only person that talked to me. Like, you were the only one of everybody on that tour who would say words to me. Actually, I think if we go into our DM’s or something, there’s a photo from the day we met, I think.”
“I also thought you were crazy. Insane,” the “In My Blood” crooner added. “I thought you were out of your mind. I’d be in my bus where no one could see me. I’d be looking through the window and I’d see you like, flying around on a scooter and jumping and doing cartwheels. I’d be like, she’s insane. Close the window and go to sleep.”
Feelings Started To Develop After They Released A Song Together

In 2015, the two stars teamed up for a new song together called “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” And according to Cabello, feelings started to develop between them after that, but they weren’t ready to date just yet.
“During ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ I really bonded with him as more than a friend. I think he did, too, but we were both really young, and he was experiencing the pressures of his career,” she told RollingStone Magazine. “I don’t think we knew what to do with those feelings. It was this awkward thing where we both liked each other, but we weren’t together. It was just weird. An energy was there from the beginning, but after that song, we didn’t spend as much time together. Our paths just didn’t cross in that way romantically until we started hanging out again and writing. For me, it just brought it back.”
While promoting the new song during an appearance on The Late, Late Show With James Corden, Mendes claimed he had tried to make a move on the brunette beauty but that she had turned him down.
“Every time I try to make a move she just swears me off,” he explained. “It’s never gonna happen.”
“That’s 100 percent not… He friend-zones me! He calls me ‘kid!’ He has never tried to make a move,” Cabello insisted.
After That, The Rumor Mill Started Turning

In the months that followed, they constantly hung out, shared the cutest photos together and gushed over each other in interviews, and naturally, many fans started to ship them and wonder if they were more than friends.
“She’s phenomenal,” Mendes said in a 2016 interview with Seventeen Magazine. “I love her and she’s so talented. She’s one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart. We aren’t dating, but musically she blows my mind.”
“He’s so cute, I love him,” Cabello gushed to The Zach Sang Show in 2018. “We’re always texting and always on the phone. We’re never in the same place at the same time but we’re always texting about random stuff. We talk about Harry Potter. I love Shawn, he’s a real friend.”
The pop star even called the former Fifth Harmony member “wife” material during one interview! He said, “She has the best sense of humor and she’s probably — other than me — the most determined person I’ve ever met… The next guy that finds her should ‘wife’ her up.”
But They Made It Clear At The Time That They Were Nothing More Than Friends

But despite all their sweet interactions and moments, they still insisted they were definitely not dating.
“We’re just really close friends. She is one of those people who is just very easy to connect with and still, to this day, is one of my greatest friends,” Mendes told People Magazine. “You find that instant connection with people, and she’s one of them.”
He also insisted to Capital FM, “We’re not dating. Set that straight. Don’t ask again.”
So When Did They Finally Realize They Had Feelings For Each Other?

In 2019, the singers collaborated on another song called “Señorita.” They got pretty cozy in the music video for it, fueling speculation once again that something was going on between them. To make things even more suspicious, news hit the web that Cabello and her longtime boyfriend, Matthew Hussey, had called it quits days later.
Then, when the two stars were caught holding hands on July 3, 2020, it was all the confirmation fans needed. They were also spotted cuddling at a Fourth of July party the next day, and it definitely seemed like something was going on between them.
“I remember there was a time before we started dating, where I was like, ‘I don’t know what I should do. I don’t know if I should tell her how I feel or what I should do,’” Mendes later explained about the moment he decided to share his feelings for Cabello. “I was driving down the street and right in the moment when I was like, ‘OK, I’m not going to tell her,’ I passed a street that said, ‘Camila.’ I really believe in that stuff.”
But at first, the X Factor alum didn’t feel the same way.
“I just felt bad that I had — this person had been my friend for a really long time and we were really, really close. When he confessed that he had feelings for me things kind of got awkward because we weren’t together and so I felt like I was hurting him and I felt weird because it felt like we were kind of drifting away as friends,” she recalled to Entertainment Tonight Canada. “And everybody knows what it’s like when you have someone you’re very close with and I don’t know, they say they have feelings for you and the friendship feels tense suddenly. I felt really bad about hurting him, about hurting somebody that was my friend and was a big part of my life and then they weren’t as much anymore.”
She continued, “I had liked him, but he wasn’t ready. And so then he liked me, but I was not really there to like him in that way anymore, because I moved on. And I was just kind of angry about it because I was like, ‘Now you’re saying that you’re in love with me, you waited so long and now it’s too late.’”
Since They Made Things Official, They’ve Been As Cute As Could Be

Despite the rocky start, after they did make things official, they quickly became couple goals.
“I think I’ve actually known him the longest out of anybody in the music industry — we’ve been in each other’s lives for like four or five years, and it’s been really beautiful to kinda grow up together. It’s actually a really beautiful feeling to know that this person is always going to be in my life, we’re always going to love each other,” Cabello gushed to Clash Magazineabout her beau. ” I feel like it’s so rare to meet someone in this industry and find a person of that quality, and I feel like Shawn is that person for me. I just trust him, and no matter the level of intensity that he has around his career or I have, he is just normal, and that is so rare and precious to find in this industry. To be able to hang out with someone and you don’t really care that they’re Shawn Mendes, you know what I mean? You’re just people, and that is definitely something that is rare.”
The singer even told Elle Magazine that she had fallen in love.
“Honestly, this past year and a half was the first time I really experienced falling in love with another person. I think there is so much more depth to love when you know you are in it with another person,” she said. “You have so much more to say — I think that’s what makes me emotional.”
Plus, during an interview with New Music Daily With Zane Lowe for Apple Music’s Beats 1, she opened up about the things she loved most about Mendes.
“I think that he has a very kind of pure, free energy,” Cabello explained. “Like he’ll say to me sometimes, ‘Oh, I had to talk to this person because it made my heart hurt.’ And I feel like he feels this need to kind of lift the weight of whatever is hurting him in order for him to be free. And I think that that’s really beautiful. That’s a trait that I’ve adopted, like whenever I feel like there’s a weird energy between me and somebody or if my heart is hurting for some reason, I’m like, ‘OK, what do I need to do?’ And I’ve noticed that about him.”
She continued, “I think it’s because of this purity that he has that I don’t think that he can lie or fake because it hurts his heart. He’s just, like, a very pure person and I think he’s constantly kind of lifting those weights off of him because he can’t live like that and I love that about him.”
They Wrote A Lot Of Songs About Each Other

When Cabello’s album, Romance, came out in December 2019, it contained so many songs about her beau! She explained in an interview that the songs “Liar” and “Shameless” were inspired by her having feelings for Mendes, but not wanting to like him.
“I was denying feelings for someone because it was scary, and that’s the tea,” she said while describing “Shameless.” “I get scared of falling in love. I’m not this hopeless romantic who’s like, ‘Everything is fun and awesome.’ That s**t is scary. ‘Shameless’ is such a good moment for me because, right now, I’m not afraid. I’m done being afraid. Let’s just go for it. I don’t want to be afraid anymore. It’s kind of a joke how much I literally was denying how much I denied liking this person. Ask my mom! I would be like, ‘I don’t care that he’s going to be there. So? I’m over it. He’s just my friend.’ And so I would see him and I would be like, ‘Waaah. I like him.’”
Plus, it’s believed that Mendes’ upcoming song, “Wonder,” is about Cabello. Why? Well, he has a tattoo of the word “Wonder” on his arm, and it’s allegedly written in her handwriting. How sweet is that?! We can’t wait to see what comes next for the couple!
