Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may make King Charles sad(der) this year. One royal expert believes that Harry and his American wife are still feeling cold vibes from across the pond. As a result, they will probably make this another year of sad firsts for King Charles. Charles was coronated earlier this year and should be enjoying a triumphant first Yule on the throne. But that may not come to pass.

Unfortunately for King Charles, his first year as monarch isn’t only plagued by trouble from his youngest son. He’s also facing a major dilemma from an unexpected direction: the memoir of the late Queen Elizabeth. Charles will be handpicking a historian to write his mother’s memoir from among royal experts. But there’s one little hitch.
During Elizabeth’s reign, a number of high-profile scandals took place. Paparazzi exist to a fevered degree that no British monarch ever faced before. Therefore, the public already knows the ins and outs of most of these scandals. A biographer hoping to paint a rosy picture of her time on the throne will have to tread carefully around these scandals. Since at least one of them involves the current ruling monarch, King Charles.
The biography of Queen Elizabeth is reportedly going to be the longest ever written. And Royal historian Robert Lacey recently revealed to The Royal Observer why that might be making the King a little jumpy. Lacey explains, “Any serious book has to examine the more difficult aspects of the King’s relationship with his mother.” He adds, “That’s why I wonder whether it can possibly be published in his lifetime. The years of real crisis in the Queen’s reign revolved around the breakup of Charles’s marriage to Diana. There is the testimony of a private secretary that the Queen told Charles she wanted ‘nothing to do’ with Camilla — whom she described as ‘that wicked woman,’ and that Prince Charles himself was close to tears over this.”
He muses: “I can’t see any way that the candid verdicts on Prince Charles among some very senior figures in the palace and during the monarchy’s dark days of the 1990s can possibly be published during his reign.”

King Charles is busy figuring out that delicate detail. And Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be making the upcoming holidays difficult. The Montecito duo did not attend Christmas festivities with the London royals last year. So the pair skipping out on the same this year would be nothing new. However, there’s been one major change: Harry’s father is now the King, which makes the stakes even higher.
Last Christmas was the family’s first Christmas without their matriarch and monarch, Elizabeth. So it was a strange year for everyone. But now, with this being Charles’ first Christmas on the throne, one would expect his younger son to attend family gatherings in England. However, historian and royal expert Dr Tessa Dunlop recently spoke with The Mirror. And she believes this won’t be the case again this year.
Dunlop told the outlet, “Christmas is coming and we want Meghan and Harry to inject the Windsor brand with a bit of transatlantic tension. But don’t hold your breath, just as Harry was a no-show at Balmoral this summer it is unlikely that he’ll grace Sandringham with his presence.”

Rumors have been dogging the pair that Harry is pining for his old life in England. And now that Harry and Meghan no longer have access to their once-marital home at Frogmore, they may buy somewhere to use when they visit the country. Dunlop added, “Far from buying a penthouse near London, it doesn’t even look like King Charles will get a Christmas cuddle with those absent grandchildren.” She suspects the pair will “branch out and buy somewhere of their own” because of a “mission driven by homesick Harry.”
Dunlop mused, “As with so many Sussex rumors, the subtext here is marital tension. Meghan is just fine in California with her celebrity chums, hot new agent and pending return as an influencer. Not so Harry, who is often pictured looking, well, spare.”
The absence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, along with their children, would be keenly felt by King Charles this year, his first Christmas on the throne. It’s another chapter in the heartbreaking saga that has become the royal family’s legacy.
