When Katy Perry dropped her new music video on Monday, December 21, her former nemesis Taylor Swift had nothing but nice things to say about it! Yep, for those who missed it, in the visual for Perry’s latest single “Not the End of the World,” aliens attempted to kidnap the singer, but accidentally took her lookalike Zooey Deschanel instead! And Swift had the best reaction to it.
“THIS IS GENIUS,” the “Lover” songstress tweeted in response to Perry’s new video.

Wow, seeing them interact online after years of feuding is seriously so amazing! But wait, how exactly did they go from enemies to friends, you ask?! And why were they fighting in the first place? Not to worry, you guys, because we went ahead and broke down all of their drama from start to finish. Here’s everything you need to know about Perry and Swift’s rocky relationship…
Taylor Swift And Katy Perry Started Out As Friends

Let’s flash back to 2009, when Swift and Perry seemed to be the best of friends. They were spotted hanging out together at various awards shows, and the blonde beauty tweeted her support for the “Roar” artist a few times. Get this — they even sang teamed up to perform Perry’s song “Hot ‘N Cold” on stage together during Swift’s Fearless tour. So yeah, it definitely seemed like everything was all good between them.
But Things Turned Ugly In 2014

But when they both dated John Mayer (Swift was briefly linked to him in 2009 and Perry was in a relationship with him from 2012-2015), it made things complicated. And when Swift accused Perry of trying to steal her backup dancers from her Red Tour in 2014, things came to a head.
“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not,” Swift told Rolling Stone at the time. “She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’ She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”
After the article came out, Perry seemed to respond with a shady tweet. She wrote, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…” and although she didn’t mention Swift by name, many people thought it was a message to the singer.

They Even Wrote A Few Songs About Each Other
Things got so bad that the two stars even wrote songs about each other! Swift released “Bad Blood” about the situation, while Perry’s song “Swish Swish” is rumored to be inspired by Swift. Yikes. And things didn’t end there! They continued to throw shade towards each other over the years — like the time Swift uploaded all of her old songs to Spotify on the same day Perry released her new album. Or the time Perry named her perfume “Mad Love,” which is a line from Swift’s song “Bad Blood.”
In 2017, Katy Perry Said She Was Over It

In 2017, the pop star addressed the drama during an appearance on James Corden‘s Carpool Karaoke, and she said she was ready for it all to be over.
“She started it and it’s time for her to finish it,” Perry explained. “I tried to talk to her about it, and she wouldn’t speak to me. I do the right thing any time it feels like a fumble. It was a full shutdown, and then she writes a song about me, and I’m like, ‘OK. Cool. Cool. Cool. That’s how you want to deal with it?’ Karma. But what I want to say is, I’m ready for that BS to be done. Now, there’s the law of cause and effect: you do something, there’s going to be a reaction. And trust me daddy, there’s gonna be a reaction. It’s all about karma.”
She also added on her podcast, “I am ready to let it go. I forgive her and I’m sorry for anything I ever did, and I hope the same from her. I think it’s actually like, I think it’s time. There are bigger fish to fry, and there are real problems in the world. You know what I’m saying? And I love her, and I want the best for her. And I think she’s a fantastic songwriter, and I think that, you know, if we, both her and I, can be representatives of strong women that come together despite their differences, I think the whole world is going to go like, ‘Yeah, well we can do this.’ I don’t know. Like maybe I don’t agree with everything she does and she doesn’t agree with everything I do, but I just really truly want to come together in a place of love and forgiveness and understanding and compassion. There’s a lot of other things out there in the world that people need to be focused on, and I truly, like, God bless her on her journey. God bless her.”
Then, Katy Perry Extended An Olive Branch — Literally
When Swift started her Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, Perry sent her a super sweet gift, seemingly ending their feud once and for all. At the time, Swift shared a snap of the present — which was an olive branch — to her Instagram Stories, captioning it, “Thank you, Katy,” with a heart.

Then, in 2019, Swift baked Perry some chocolate chip cookies! She even left a nice message on the plate for the 36-year-old, which read, “Peace at last.” Perry shared a pic of them to her Instagram, writing, “Feels good @TaylorSwift.”

Katy Perry Made A Surprise Appearance In Taylor Swift’s Music Video

When Swift released her “You Need To Calm Down” music video in June 2019, fans were left seriously shook. Why? Well, Perry actually made a surprise appearance in it! The visual showed her and Swift dressed up in a burger and a french fries costume as they hugged it out, and everyone was pretty excited about it.
“She and I definitely have been on very good terms lately, but I don’t think anybody knew it. We just kind of reconnected privately and just wanted to make sure that everything was really good with us and that it was like a very real thing before we let anyone know,” Swift told U.K. radio show Heart Breakfast With Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden a few days after it came out. “We’re not only good but we’re friends again. So it was really wonderful to get to sort of unveil it to the world in like a cheeky sort of fun way.”
She also explained how they made up. She continued, “We reconnected a while ago. It started when she sent an olive branch, like an actual olive branch, to my tour, and I was like, ‘That is not only really cool and really sincere (the note), but like, very clever with sending an actual olive branch.’ It was a beautiful like, wreath, and you could like hang it. It was really — it was so great. And so that was when, you know I think for both of us, there were no weird feelings, everything was on good terms. And then we ran into each other at a party a while ago and it was literally like in the video, seeing each other, but without the food costumes. It was just fully sincere and like we realized we’ve grown up, we’ve grown enough to realize the fact that us feeling pitted against each other for so long really did add to whatever tension we were feeling in our friendship. It’s a really positive thing for both of us in our lives.”
Perry also opened up about it to Howard Stern, and she said that she wanted to fix things with Swift so that she could set an example for her younger fans.
“Gossip and lies, they take the elevator. But truth takes the stairs … time will tell my story,” Perry said. “What I’m so grateful for is that we did get to make up and we made up publicly to be an example of redemption. It’s hard for young girls, growing up [with] cliques and high school and pettiness and all that stuff, so now we’re super friendly and I’ve always wanted the best for her and we can talk about the best we want for each other.”
The Two Singers Are Actually Ninth Cousins

Perry was in for a total shock in July 2020, when she discovered that she and Swift were actually long distant cousins! According to MyHeritage.com the ladies are ninth cousins, and when an interviewer told Perry about it, she couldn’t believe it.
“Well, we fight like cousins,” she joked. “Wow, I’m going to have to ask her if this is true or if we should get blood tests together.”
So where do they stand now? Well, while chatting with Stellar Magazine earlier this year, Perry explained that although they don’t see each other much, they text “often!”
“Well, we don’t have a very close relationship because we are very busy, but we text a lot,” the singer revealed. “I was impressed by her documentary [Miss Americana] because I saw some self-awareness starting to happen and I saw a lot of vulnerability. I was really excited for her to be able to show that to the world — that things aren’t perfect, they don’t have to be and it’s more beautiful when they aren’t. Even though it was difficult, it was important to make that appearance in the music video because people want people to look up to. We wanted it to be an example of unity. Forgiveness is important. It’s so powerful. If you can forgive your enemy, that’s amazing. As difficult as it is!”
